Urgent Help for Laura: Grief, $1,300 Social Security Debt, and a Broken Lifeline Car.
A TRAGIC LOSS, A CRUEL SSA RULE, AND FINANCIAL CRISIS
Our mom, Laura, lost her soulmate, the love of her life, and our dad, Tom, on September 30, 2025, at 1:07 PM. They were just weeks away from celebrating their 31st wedding anniversary on October 22nd.
As she navigates unimaginable grief, she has been simultaneously hit with a devastating and immediate financial crisis brought on by a cruel bureaucratic rule.
The Crisis Explained:
Despite Tom being alive for the entire month of September, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has a rule: a beneficiary must live until the very last minute of the month (11:59 PM) to be entitled to that month's payment (which is paid the following month). Because he passed away at 1:07 PM on September 30th, his benefit payment, which was already deposited on October 3rd, was clawed back by the SSA on October 20th.
This reversal has left Laura's bank account $1,300 overdrawn.
A TWO-MONTH FINANCIAL FREEZE
Laura is disabled and relies entirely on her fixed Social Security Disability (SSD) income. Because of the $1,300 negative balance, her next SSD payment—the one she is due to receive in November—will be completely intercepted by the bank to cover the debt, and her account will still be overdrawn.
This means our mother has effectively lost two consecutive months of income (October and November) and has been left with absolutely no money for basic survival while she is grieving.
THE URGENT NEEDS: Survival & Independence
We are seeking immediate help to cover her essential needs and restore her independence:
1. Clear the $1,300 Bank Debt: This is the most urgent step to make her account whole and stop the financial cascading.
2. Cover Essential Living Costs: She needs funds for November to pay for her utilities, monthly bills, and to buy food for herself and her service dogs (one of which has recently become ill and will need to be put down soon, which is another cost she cannot afford and will just add to her grief).
3. Repair Her Lifeline Car: Her car is vital to her independence as a disabled person. It desperately needs a transmission repair to pass smog and be reliably safe. Without it, she is completely dependent on her daughter, Amanda, for every doctor's appointment, prescription pickup, and grocery run, etc.
Our mother is in a profound state of sorrow, and the fear of losing her home, being unable to feed and care for her pets, or not having the mobility to care for herself is compounding her pain and making it hard for her to properly mourn.
Every dollar helps lift this catastrophic, undeserved debt and allows her to focus on honoring the man she loved without the terror of financial ruin.
Our mom has always been the one helping others in any way she could. She has always felt bad about reaching out for help for herself. We would like to show her that the love and help that she gave so freely to others can come back to her in her time of need.
If you are unable to donate, we understand, but please share this campaign widely and prayers are always greatly appreciated.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us support our mother during this impossible time.
