Hi everyone! I’m a 13 year old girl and a young performer of Peking Opera.

Peking Opera is one of China’s most traditional and expressive art forms. It combines singing, speaking, acting, and martial arts all in one performance. I started learning Peking Opera when I was 4 years old, and had my first performance at the age of 5. Over the past 9 years, I’ve performed many times in cities like Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal.

This September, I’ll be performing in a very special production: The Legend of the White Snake. It’s one of the most well known Chinese folk stories. It tells the tale of Bai Suzhen, a white snake spirit who transforms into a human and falls in love with a kind scholar named Xu Xian. They get married and live happily along with Bai Suzhen’s loyal friend, Xiao Qing, a green snake spirit who also transforms into human form. However a monk named Fahai tries to separate the couple, believing that spirits and humans should not be together. Will the spirits be able to conceal their real identity against Xu Xian or will Fahai reveal everything…

I’ll be playing Bai Suzhen at two key points in the story, at the very beginning and again at the end. It’s the most challenging and interesting role I’ve had.

To prepare for this performance, I’ve been practicing every day and also taking extra professional classes to improve my singing, movement, and acting skills. I feel more and more confident, but the cost of putting on this show is really high for me and my family.

今年九月，我将参与一场特别大戏《白蛇传》的演出。这个家喻户晓的中国民间传说讲述了白蛇精白素贞化作人形，与善良书生许仙相爱的故事。他们与白素贞的忠实战友小青——同样修炼成人形的青蛇精——共同过着幸福生活。然而僧人法海却认定人妖殊途，执意要拆散这对眷侣。白蛇青蛇能否守住身份秘密？法海又会如何揭穿真相……

我将饰演白素贞这一角色，呈现她在故事开端与结局两个重要阶段的故事线。这是我演艺生涯中最具挑战也最富趣味的角色。

为准备这次演出，我每天坚持练功，还额外参加专业课程提升唱腔、身段和表演技巧。虽然信心与日俱增，但演出成本对我和家庭而言确实是不小的负担。
