A Native Garden in Brooklyn

Donation protected
Hello! We are the residents of 811 Cortelyou in the Kensington neighborhood of Brooklyn, and our project aims to transform 1400sq. ft. of a city block into a vibrant green space and safe haven for pollinators and wildlife.

Our neighborhood currently lacks a dedicated native plant garden, and we believe that establishing one would be extremely beneficial to our community and local ecosystem. Not only would this expansive garden enhance biodiversity, provide necessary habitat for birds and pollinators, and improve our air quality, but it would also allow residents and neighbors to connect with the beauty of nature and experience the happiness that green spaces bring (especially to those of us who live without backyards of our own).

But this project isn't just about creating a stunning garden full of birds and butterflies. It is also about creating a sense of community and shared responsibility for the earth we live on. This garden will act as a model for sustainable urban living, a place where native plants, people, and wildlife can thrive together.

To achieve this vision, we need your support. Your donations will help us purchase native plants, compost, soil, and mulch, as well as tools and materials for installing an irrigation system to most efficiently water our plants during those hot summer months. We also plan to hire a professional landscaper to design the garden and guide us on best practices for maintenance and stewardship.

We pledge to:
  • Use only plants that are native to the Northeast (with at least 60% being native to the New York City region in order to support our local wildlife)
  • Source 100% of our plants from local, independent farmers and growers
  • Select plants with varied bloom times to ensure that both humans and wildlife can enjoy the garden year-round, not just in Spring and Summer.
  • Include additional garden features that support and protect insects and birds (birdbaths, bee hotels, nesting boxes, etc)
  • Never use insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, or synthetic fertilizers
  • Donate a portion of plant seeds each year to our neighbors, local schools and seed banks
