The Solidarity Movement for a New Ethiopia (SMNE), is a non-political and non-violent social justice movement of diverse people that advocates for truth, freedom, justice, good governance and the civil, human and economic rights of all the people of Ethiopia— putting humanity before ethnicity, or other differences— and caring about the freedom and well being of others— for no one will be free until all are free.
In the last months, Ethiopians have witnessed widespread mass protests in objection to years of injustice, oppression, corruption, and the robbing of land and resources from the people. The regime in power has reacted with brutality; killing, injuring, torturing and imprisoning countless peaceful protestors.
Ethiopians are also facing the worst drought in fifty years; yet, the authoritarian regime is minimizing the severe risk of hunger and starvation to over ten million Ethiopians. International humanitarians have warned that the threat of harm to Ethiopian children from the famine is second only to the threat to children of Syria due to war. What happens in the next weeks, months and year and how it is addressed could make a huge difference to the future of Ethiopians.
The SMNE, already connected to decision-makers in the international community as well as to Ethiopians worldwide, seeks to provide strategic direction during this critical time so as to call for intervention as well as to help bring reconciliation among the people, the restoration of justice and meaningful reforms. The SMNE is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization and donations received are tax-deductible in the United States.
