I began losing my voice toward the end of 2020, and for a voiceover guy, that sure isn’t good. In March of 2021 I found out that I had cancer of my vocal cords. I don’t qualify for any subsidies for insurance through the ACA, and live in Tennessee, which has refused to expand Medicaid. This leaves me in the ACA “gap”, and my only option was to pay full price for insurance on the marketplace that covers pre-existing conditions. That insurance will begin on April 1st, but is far more expensive than I can afford, and have already come out of pocket over $5000 in March alone, and none of that is applied to what will be a $9000 out-of-pocket maximum. Even after that maximum is reached there will likely be much, much more expense related to treatment that insurance won’t cover. So to put it bluntly, I’m desperate, scared, and have no idea how I’m ever going to be able to get better without becoming destitute. Even if the rather large goal is met here, I’ll still likely be facing many thousands of dollars in medical debt. If you can help, I’d be eternally grateful.
