You might know Kay (who also goes by Alice), the nice woman who helps children and parents cross the busy Rose Street intersection outside Jefferson Elementary. It's her job to stop the rushed drivers from mowing right through the crosswalk, and she does it with a wave and a smile and a kind word for everyone. Even after they graduate from Jefferson, she keeps an eye on the kids walking up to King Middle School, too, and I see many drivers smiling and waving to her as they go by so I know that her kindness and charm has touched many.
I'm a parent at Jefferson, and having our day start with her is a real pleasure. Lately, though, I've noticed that she's been having some trouble: Her knees are acting up (ortheoarthritis, meniscus problems) and causing her a lot of pain. Standing and walking on the hard concrete is not helping. Her doctors recommend surgery, which she might have to do this summer. Not only that, but her car just broke down and needs over $1,000 worth of repairs.
To me, Kay plays an integral part of the Jefferson experience, and so I'm asking the community to consider a donation. I'd love it if she had at least enough money to fix her car. If there was enough to help her with the surgery this summer, that would be even more wonderful. If we exceed our goal, all additional money will go to Kay to help her over these hurdles. I want Kay to be able to stand on that corner taking care of pedestrians and being delightful for as long as possible. Even $5 can make a difference.
