One Land is an NYC-based organization seeking non profit status dedicated to improve the quality of life of Dominican and Haitian children. Our purpose is to address structural and cultural barriers that prevent them from receiving quality education, to tackle the issue of food insecurity in both countries, and to uplift families during the holidays.
Poverty is a huge barrier when it comes to receiving an education. 1 in 3 Dominicans and half of all the Dominican youth are either poor or live below the poverty line, and 59 percent of Haitians live on less than $2 a day. As a result of the poverty levels and other social barriers, 53% of Haitian students drop out before completing primary school and 40% of Dominican students drop out before the 8th grade.
In August, One Land hopes to provide 200 book bags filled with educational supplies to students in the Dominican Republic and Haiti — but we need your help! We are accepting new and gently used book bags from anyone located in or around New York City until August 7th. If you are interested in donating a book bag you can donate to this account, or you can contact us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org.
