My father always said to me 'before I die, I need to see the Cronulla sharks win a grand final'. Little did any of us know that just days after the mighty Cronulla sharks won the 2016 premiership, my father would be diagnosed with stage 3 brain cancer. We were told we would have 5-10 years together. Well the porch lights were turned off for us for all the wrong reasons. Dad underwent brain surgery to remove his tumour and undertook chemotherapy and radiation treatments as well as maintaining a strong 1st place in his footy tipping competition. In April this year a scan showed my father was cancer free, but due to the aggression of stage 3 diagnosis dad continued with chemotherapy. We looked forward to mid September when we would get the all clear for Dad to finish chemo. Dad then became dizzy, light headed and developed severe swelling on the brain which required strong steroid use, turning him insulin dependant diabetic. A few weeks ago we noticed dad was no longer steady on his feet, his vision was going and he was unable to articulate any sentences or remember his loved ones names. He was taken to the hospital where scans showed the tumour had returned, grown and aggressed to a stage 4. We again operated and held hope with a shorter prognosis of 1-6 months potentially in palliative care. Post surgery test showed the tumour again had returned to consume the entire brain. Dad couldn't walk, eat, speak or have any movement or vision on his right hand side. We were told we would have 1-4 weeks together. Dad fought with us with all his might to kick cancers ass but unfortunately lost his battle just one week after our 1-4 week prognosis.
Although dad didn't win this fight, we ask you to join us, in his fiery memory, to support those to continue the battle to kick cancers ass. Due to dads strong passion, love and devotion to NRL, we feel the Mark Hughes foundation is the best suiting foundation to support on Dads behalf and in his memory. Oh and remember, Up Up Cronulla!
