On Thursday night hazel ingested medicine not meant for dogs but for horses. We took her to the ER when her symptoms became concerning. She's had fluids, lipid treatment for detoxing her system, and constant monitoring by the vet staff. As of now 1/19 she'll need a few days in the hospital and to be transferred to another hospital as the one where we brought her closes for the weekend.
Her already high vet bill is jumping in cost and we're asking for any and all help you can.
I don't have words for how amazing hazel is and how heartbroken we are that she's going through this right now. We joke that she's basically our child. But that's very much our reality.
Update: 1/19 6PM...
Hazel has been successfully moved and settled in at the 24hr vet. She's stable but in a coma. She's breathing on her own but struggling. Under vet advice she's going to start on a ventilator tonight to help her breathe easier. She's on antibiotics now to prevent pneumonia setting in.
Update: 1/20 6pm...
The vets are "cautiously optimistic" at this point. Stinky girl is responding to stimulus and briefly waking when they poke her. She started chewing on the tubes after being on the ventilator overnight so she's off the device and breathing on her own. She's still considered in critical condition because she can't stay awake for more than a few seconds at a time. She is currently blind, we're hoping it will slowly return in the coming months. The vet will be administering a couple more doses of lipid detox treatments and we're hoping that will pull her out enough to be transferred out of the ICU and into a kennel.
