Message from Nichole about her cancer journey:
My cancer journey started March 23, 2025 when she went to the ER for shortness of breath and what I thought was a pulled muscle in my back possible. After 2 scans - The big C word was said loud & clear unfortunately. After a 4 day hospital stay - biopsy of the liver and a colonoscopy, it was confirmed it was cancer Stage 4 Liver & Colon Cancer. PET scan completed in April. I met with a Surgeon to find out I was not a candidate for any type of operation as there were too many masses / tumors and they were already too large in size. Treatment plan was set up in New Port Richey location, I was to do 12 rounds of chemo with an aggressive add on of Avastin to Target the liver. I had been to Moffitt early in the diagnosis for a 2nd opinion and decided to keep them aboard. During my visit to Tampa Magnolia Moffitt Center in August 2025, they did a routine scan and discovered the tumors on the liver had grown. At that time I decided to transfer my care to Moffitt fully. I did complete my 12 rounds of chemo prior to transferring to Moffitt. Once I started with Moffitt, we changed up the regimen to a more aggressive chemotherapy, Irinotecan, with no set amount of treatments - just trying to find something that works and can control the tumors.
In recent scans, MRI had had a lot of mixed results as one tumor shrunk and one has grown. The cancer tumor markers decreased. However this chemotherapy regimen has been very tough on me. My white blood cell count is lower each chemo treatment, requiring an injection of Neupogen to stimulate my bone marrow to increase the white blood count.
As of now my treatment is 2 times monthly - every other week. I am seen at Moffitt for labs & Dr consults on Tuesdays, on Wednesday I have 4 hours of chemo infusion and then for the next 48 hours I take home a 2nd chemotherapy - Flourouracil - that is given through a portable pump. On Fridays I return to Moffitt for disconnect of the pump and my injection to boost the white blood count. The other option if this chemo continues to deplete my white blood count and tumors continue to grow, is a pill form of chemotherapy. My 11 days out of the 14 are very rough. I still have not accepted that I am bald! I take each day and appreciate I am here to enjoy my children and grandchildren. I have a great support team and prayer warriors that I count on daily.
Lately, I have not been feeling well and unfortunately have been in and out of the hospital multiple times.
