Upgrading Sambang Upper Basic School

Sambaing Upper Basic School is in Niamina Sambang, Niamina West District in the Central River Region of The Gambia. The school was founded by an NGO - The Gambia Rural Development Agency (GARDA) in 1997. The school has only one building which contains three classroom and cover year seven to nine. Moreover, Niamina does not have a senior school either, which put a lot of pressure on pupils to further their education beyond year nine. In 2001, the government took over the school and subsequently, teachers were paid by the government. The school has had some successes in the past. It was named Centre of Excellence by Forum for African Women Educationalists, Gambia Chapter (FAWEGAM) in 2003. However, there has not been any infrastructure upgrading, nor has the school expanded beyond the three classrooms. The corrugated roof has severely deteriorated with leakages during the rainy season. As a result, teaching has not been conducted smoothly, which then impact on attendance, performance and attainment. As a result, Sambang Development Associated seeks funds in to upgrade the roofing as an urgent need. In the long term, we intend to raise additional funds to build more classrooms and extend teaching to year twelve.
