Hello,

Our mother, Yolanda Choy, had an emergency spinal surgery on April 13, 2022. Her condition is OPLL, which stands for Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament. Our mother is currently 53 and will turn 54 on August 8th. Unfortunately, her healing time is taking a lot longer than anticipated, and that means an extended hospital stay beyond what the doctors expected. She has not been able to return home because she was transferred from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility as her mobility was severely impacted, and she must now learn how how to walk again.

Our mother worked as a Police Officer for the New York City Police Department out of the 5th precinct in Chinatown Manhattan, and in 2014 after 20 years of service, she was able to retire. Unfortunately, her insurance provider will no longer remit payment for the facility providing the rehabilitation services needed for her full recovery. Our mom has to pay out of pocket to continue care is $4,000 per month. We seek to reach the goal of $50,000 to ensure she has at least a year of maintenance. Her recovery is long, and they approximate that it will take a year for her to recover fully.

My sisters and I are trying very hard to be there for her and stay strong, but we cannot fund her healthcare which is gravely needed. Before this, our mom had a very active life; she was energetic, vibrant, always on the go, and always out with her grandchildren. Summer is our mom's favorite time of year. She loves the beach, traveling, and fishing with her significant other.

Given all of the obstacles our mom is facing, she continues to be upbeat and is optimistic about making a full recovery. She is a fighter, and her main focus is regaining full mobility. Her grandchildren, Ariel, who is 7, and Alejandro, who is 4, miss her terribly. We all miss her, and it pains us that she has to remain in the rehabilitation facility, but we have faith she will get better with proper care. Our mom has a heart of gold and always goes out of her way to help others, so we would like to ensure we can help her. We recognize that everyone has hardships, so we do not want to add to anyone's plate, but if there is anything you can do to help our mom get the care she needs, we would greatly appreciate your help.

Sincerely,
Kathy, Angelica & Michelle
