Empowering the Students of Anne Arundel County

If Dr. Arlotto and the Anne Arundel County Board of Education cannot get students back 4 days a week now, how can we trust them to get all the children, who wish to be back, 5 days a week come August?

Update May 13th 2021
We are following the advice from our lawyer and are going to prepare and file a Complaint for Declaratory and Injunctive Relief. We will also file a Motion for Preliminary Injunction. Once the complaint and motion are filed, we will seek to schedule a hearing in August. As the summer progresses, we can decide whether we are satisfied with the state of activity by the school board.
Our lawyer recommends pushing this hard in the fall (late summer before the start of school).  The BOE is stating 5 days in the fall with no hybrid options, and we plan on holding them to it.  We do not have enough to go on right now with only a couple weeks left in the school year and all of the BOE promises (empty or not) that the board has made.
It would be helpful to us to have as many plaintiffs as possible, and if the plaintiffs could give background on their children’s specific situation. We do not need to know the children’s names, but we would like to share information about how the children are doing. Specifically:
What grade are they in?
What do the “work from home” days look like under the hybrid plan?
How are their grades/attendance compared to previous years?
How is their mental health?
What are your concerns as parents?
Anything else you think may be relevant.
We think the court should hear the impact AABOE decisions are having on your children.  This info can come in any format as we will incorporate it into our Complaint and Motion for Preliminary Injunction. If you have any questions, please let me know. Please email your responses to [email redacted]
Thank you!

This GoFundMe supports a proposed lawsuit against Dr. Arlotto and the Anne Arundel County Board of Education.  It will require the BOE to ensure our students are back in the building full time, five days a week, in September 2021.  The AA County Board of Education recently passed a motion to get students back in school 4 days a week “promptly” but the motion provided numerous loopholes, did not specify a timeline, and schools could not accommodate all of the students who requested 4 days.  They have never followed through with their timelines and we’ve lost so much already, we can’t gamble with our children’s education.  Help us ensure these schools are open 5 days a week come September!!

Our Mission Statement:

Who we are:  This group consists of parents who are lawyers, nurses, philanthropists, former teacher, airline attendant, builder, engineer, PTO members, medical sales rep and community volunteers from the South River and Broadneck School districts.

Our Goals:

Have the BOE commit in writing that the county will be back 5 days a week in September.
Have the BOE update their guidelines put out earlier this school year to account for the new and improved CDC guidelines with less restrictive physical distancing requirements.
Allow the individual schools within the county the freedom to make choices that work best for them.  Let the schools work within the guidelines so all students who want to be back in school can get back into their buildings.  Each school is different, one set of rules will not work for all schools.
Provide each student a CHOICE.  This effort is not intended to force any student or parent to be in school when they do not want to be.

Governor Hogan and Dr. Salmon have given their approval for counties to open schools since August of 2020, and now it is time to act.  Countless states and other counties within Maryland have been back in school before AACPS.  AACo will keep dragging their feet unless pressure is put on them.  Our letters and petitions are not getting us anywhere, so it is time to take the next step.

The creators of this GoFundMe have spoken with Hartman Attorneys and discussed legal fees for action to open public schools. A retainer of $20,000 is needed as soon as possible to get working on this case.  Once we get the retainer along with affidavits, we will have a case to put pressure on the BOE.   Any funds raised here will be used to retain Hartman Attorneys at Law to bring forth this lawsuit against Dr. Arlotto and the AACo Board of Education.

Along with donations, help from the community is key.  Hartman has an expert witness lined up but we also need a pediatrician and someone in the education field that has credibility to testify.  Family statements are also great and encouraged.  If you can help with this in any way please email [email redacted]

Any funds not used directly for this lawsuit will be donated to the Lighthouse Shelter of Annapolis.
