UoB Boat Club Novice Squad vs the X39

***The UoB Boat Club Novice Squad are undertaking a sponsored race against the X39 bus to fundraise for 4x sets of beginner appropriate sculling oars***

There are many barriers to getting involved in the sport of Rowing.  First and foremost a river, lake or other suitable body of water is needed; after that an array of costly equipment. University programs like UoB Boat Club play a role in redressing an imbalance of opportunity, each year providing thousands of young people flocking to new universities the chance to try the sport for the first time.

Our mass-participation 'Learn to Row' program gives complete beginners the opportunity to take their first strokes. Our Novice Squad provides those keen to continue in the sport with the structure and support to rapidly progress to competition regionally, nationally and in some cases internationally!

By seeking sponsorship for a group activity this campaign aims to raise funds to purchase 4x sets of beginner appropriate sculling oars (sculling is when an oar is held in each rowers hand). Previous fundraising activities have enabled the purchase and refurbishment of a number of beginner appropriate sculling boats, but at the time of writing the club lacks the oars to make use of these boats at the same time.

SPONSORED ACTIVITY: In January 2019 the Novice Squad will race the X39 Bus Service the 14.3km from Bristol to the UoB Boathouse in Saltford. The squad will tackel this distance on rowing machines positioned in sight of the X39 bus stop or race the eqivilent distance to Saltford on bikes along the Bristol to Bath cycle path (no racing will take place on roads).

When reflecting on their time as Novice Rowers; many of our recent graduates speak about their personal wellbeing, and the support structures such a closely knit team provided when they were otherwise struggling to navigate a high pressured academic environment while living away from home for the first time. This year’s Novice Rowers have chosen to support the Mental Health Charity Mind by donating any funds we raise over our stated target of £1902.

Funds will be directed to the UoB Boat Club account, with excess being donated to Mind after the culmination of the campaign.
