My name is Darren Pollard. I am asking for $3500 to help save Elliott, the bravest soul I’ve ever met. He was attacked by a pit bull.
ABOUT ELLIOTT
Three and a half years ago, while waiting for the rush hour to end, my daughter and I decided to visit the Anti-Cruelty Society adoption center at PetSmart. We had no intention of adopting a dog until the we met Elliott, a skinny, nine pound, 1-year-old Chihuahua, & Dachshund mix. My daughter instantly fell in love, and couldn't stop talking about him. The next day I bit the bullet and adopted Elliott. During the adoption interview, we were told Elliott was rescued from a closed office building, after being abandoned there without food or water for almost two weeks. It was a miracle he survived that long. There was something magical about Elliott and it showed when we adopted him. Within a few months, our entire neighborhood knew about Elliot. This little dog has a personality that puts a smile on your face.
About two years into the adoption, the custody arrangement for my kids changed, and they were no longer with me on a full time basis. My schedule didn’t permit me to devote much time to Elliot, and I had no choice but to leave him at home alone most of the day. I felt sorry for him, and at the time, I really believed Elliot deserved a better situation.
Later that year, I decided to rent my house to a family, and move to a smaller space. The family that moved into my home expressed an interest in adopting Elliot for their kids. Reluctantly, I decided to allow them to take Elliot. I believed my dog was being placed in a better situation; but my gut told me he belonged with me. Unfortunately, I didn’t follow my instincts.
About a year after the family adopted Elliot, I was notified that he hit by a car. Fortunately, he escaped a major injury. Again, Elliott proved he was a survivor. It was an accident, and there was little anyone could do, but I felt like I should have been there to stop him from running into the street.
Two weeks ago I was alerted that Elliot was viciously attacked by an un-leashed pit bull. This was by far the most severe accident of his short life.
The owner of the un-leashed dog accepted responsibility, and paid $2600 for emergency surgery. Elliot survived the surgery and returned home. But a few days later, Elliots owner informed me that Elliot’s wounds were infected, and he needed another surgery that would cost an additional $2700. The owner of the pit bull agreed to pay for the second surgery too, but could only pay $500 immediately. Unfortunately, Elliot’s owners did not have money to pay for the surgery, and alow the pit bull owner to pay them back. I was worried they would have to put him to sleep, so I agreed to pay the remaining $2200 for the surgery, and the owner of the pit bull agreed to repay me in four installments.
During the second surgery Elliot’s heart inexplicably stopped beating for nearly two minutes, and then started beating again. The surgeon took him off the anesthesia immediately and began messaging his heart. Once again Elliot beat the odds and pulled through.
Unfortunately, Elliot still needs an additional surgery to repair a broken bone in his leg, and a cardiac evaluation, to determine if his heart is strong enough for a third procedure. Since Elliott’s owners do not have money for the treatment he needs. I agreed to take ownership of Elliot, and assume responsibility for all remaining medical care. My son lives with me again, and he’s committed to helping me nurse Elliott back to health.
The total cost of the remaining procedures and treatment are estimated at $3,500. The doctors are confident Elliot can make a full recovery if: 1) he has surgery before the bone starts setting, 2) I keep his wounds clean, and 3) we maintain his treatment.
Throughout this whole ordeal, Elliot still wags his tail, and tries to give attention to others. In five short years on this planet Elliot proved he’s a survivor. His will to live and happy spirit are lessons I will carry for the rest of my life. As long as Elliot is breathing, I plan to be right there with him. Unfortunately, he had to be hit by a car, attacked by a pit bull, and experience near fatal surgery for me to realize that I should be honored to be this magical dog's guardian.
Please help me save Elliot. You have my word that every penny raised will be used to ensure he gets the best care possible, and has the greatest chance to survive.
