Au Revoir Brucie

Brucie was a magical being. Brucie was one of my foster kittens when I lived in Ohio almost 11 years ago. He was the most memorable and special because even at just a few weeks old, he was so desperate to be with me that he climbed over two baby gates to sleep in bed with me. I found him terribly annoying because he needed to touch me at all times and always had a lot to say. Even on our flight home I had to keep my hand in his crate or he would scream.

When I got back to California I was almost immediately headed to Hawaii to live care free for a month. Why did I bring a kitten home with me if I was going to be traveling again? I was 25 and still learning about responsibility, clearly!

Brucie ended up staying with my mom which was probably the best thing I could have done for either of them. She needed him as much as he needed her. Instead of finding his neediness annoying, she found it endearing. For almost 11 years they lived through life together, attached at the hip, chatting together in the kitchen and truly enjoying life together.

Turns out that life has a cruel, cruel way of reminding us that the only thing for certain in this life is death. Brucie was diagnosed with lymphoma not too long ago. We were hopeful that since other than the many cancerous tumors inside his body he appeared to be feeling well and that he would pull through. Last night Brucie received a blood transfusion, took a turn for the worst and left us. A little piece of my heart left with him but with him went so much of my mom. Her constant companion.

I have created this GoFundMe to help my mom absorb some of the cost of the care he received over the last 12 hours which ended in him passing, not coming home with us.
