#unSTOPPable – one-handed braking on any bicycle

This is a crowdfunding appeal to support the development of a new invention: we want to make bikes more accessible and safe to people who are unable to use standard brakes with two hands. We are Sophie (28) and Franz (22) and we love cycling. We each have one normally developed hand, and one ‘small’, not fully developed hand. With this campaign, we ask for your help to develop a solution for safe one-handed hydraulic braking - and to distribute it to as many people as possible! Because to be #unSTOPPable, you need to be able to pull the brakes!

For each of us, cycling is one of the most important things in our lives: movement, empowerment, freedom. Cycling helps us be healthy mentally and physically, and for Franz, cycling has even become his profession. In short, for us, cycling is life. However, our disability does not always make the sport we love so easy, because you usually need two hands to safely brake a bike. We regularly put our lives at risk because our brakes do not work properly!

How many adults and children do not get on a bike in the first place because they are scared of not being able to brake safely? Whether as a recreational sport or mode of transportation, cycling is not as accessible as it should be. We want to change this!

After years of self-made interim solutions, abandoned races, unnecessary crashes, and ever-returning frustration, we have taken initiative in engineering accessible brakes. We are building a brake doubler – in Italian: sdoppiatore! Now we need your support to make it happen.

Our brake doubler is meant to do two things. It will let us operate both the front and rear brakes with one single brake lever at the same time. And it will make the full braking power of the brake lever’s pump arrive at each of the two brakes, rather than simply dividing the power into two.

We have already developed a prototype and are currently running tests. So far, all tests are carried out by Sophie on her private bike and at her personal risk. We have already put considerable money, time and nerves into the development of the brake doubler. To continue the project and bring it to success, and to hopefully provide the Sdoppiatore to many other people, we now need your support!

Dies ist ein Crowdfunding-Aufruf für Unterstützung bei der Entwicklung einer neuen Erfindung: Wir wollen Fahrräder zugänglicher und sicherer machen für Menschen, die nicht mit zwei Händen normale Bremsen bedienen können.

Wir sind Sophie (28) und Franz (22), wir lieben Fahrradfahren, und wir haben beide eine normal ausgebildete und eine ‘kleine’, nicht vollständig ausgebildete Hand. Mit dieser Kampagne wollen wir eine sichere Lösung für einhändiges hydraulisches Bremsen entwickeln - und so vielen Menschen wie möglich zur Verfügung stellen.

Für uns beide ist das Rad eines der wichtigsten Dinge im Leben - Sport, Empowerment, Freiheit. Radfahren hilft uns, psychisch und physisch gesund zu sein, und für Franz ist es sogar zum Beruf geworden. Kurz, Fahrradfahren ist unser Leben. Allerdings macht unsere Behinderung den Sport, den wir so lieben, nicht immer einfach – denn zum Bremsen braucht man auf dem Rad normalerweise zwei Hände. Wir setzen regelmäßig unser Leben aufs Spiel, weil unsere Bremsen von uns nicht so bedient werden können, wie sie sollten!

Wie viele Kinder und Erwachsene setzen sich überhaupt nicht aufs Fahrrad, weil sie Angst haben, nicht sicher bremsen zu können? Ob als Sport oder Transportmittel, das Fahrrad ist nicht so barrierefrei zugänglich, wie es sein sollte. Das wollen wir ändern!

Nach Jahren selbstgebastelter Aushilfslösungen, abgebrochener Rennen, unnötiger Stürze, und immer wiederkehrender Frustration, wenn wir allein aufgrund unserer Bremsen nicht so fahren konnten, wie wir uns das gewünscht hätten, haben wir die Initiative ergriffen. Wir bauen einen hydraulischen Bremsverdoppler - auf Italienisch: sdoppiatore!

Unser Bremsverdoppler soll zwei Dinge können: Er soll uns mit einem Bremshebel sowohl die Vorder- als auch die Hinterradbremse gleichzeitig betätigen lassen. Und er soll dafür sorgen, dass bei jeder der beiden Bremsen die volle Bremskraft der im Bremshebel verbauten Pumpe ankommt, anstatt deren Kraft einfach zu teilen.

Wir haben bereits einen Prototyp entwickelt und die ersten Tests gemacht. Alle Tests führt bisher Sophie durch, mit ihrem privaten Fahrrad und auf eigenes Risiko. Wir haben für die Entwicklung des Prototyps bereits viel Geld, Zeit und Nerven investiert. Um das Projekt weiterführen und zum Erfolg bringen zu können, und um am Ende hoffentlich vielen Menschen einen Sdoppiatore zur Verfügung stellen zu können, brauchen wir nun eure Unterstützung!

Questo è un appello crowdfunding per lo sviluppo di una nuova invenzione: Vogliamo rendere la bicicletta più accessibile e sicura per persone che non possono usare dei freni normali con due mani. Siamo Sophie (28) e Franz (22), e amiamo pedalare! Entrambi abbiamo una mano sviluppata normalmente e una più “piccola”, non completamente sviluppata. Insieme a un team di meccanici e ingegneri, stiamo sviluppando e costruendo una soluzione sicura per frenare idraulicamente con una sola mano. Per poter portare avanti lo sviluppo e rendere la nostra soluzione accessibile al maggior numero di persone possibile, abbiamo bisogno del vostro sostegno!

Per entrambi, la bicicletta rappresenta una delle cose più importanti nella vita: è sport, emancipazione e libertà, solo per citarne alcuni. Pedalare ci aiuta a mantenere la salute mentale e fisica, e per Franz è persino diventato la sua professione. In breve, la bicicletta è la nostra vita.

Tuttavia, la nostra disabilità non rende sempre facile lo sport che amiamo tanto perché per frenare in sicurezza, di solito ci vogliono due mani. Mettiamo costantemente a rischio la nostra vita perché non siamo in grado di utilizzare i freni come vorremmo.

Quanti bambini e adulti evitano completamente di andare in bicicletta perché hanno paura di non poter frenare in modo sicuro? Sia come passatempo che come mezzo di trasporto, pedalare non è accessibile come dovrebbe essere. Insieme vogliamo cambiare questo!

Dopo anni di soluzioni temporanee autocostruite, gare abbandonate, cadute evitabili e frustrazioni ricorrenti, abbiamo preso l'iniziativa. Stiamo costruendo uno strumento che permetta al freno di lavorare per due, quindi uno SDOPPIATORE!

Il nostro sdoppiatore è pensato per fare due cose. Ci permetterà di azionare contemporaneamente sia il freno anteriore che quello posteriore con una sola leva freno. E farà sì che la piena potenza frenante della pompa montata sulla leva freno arrivi a ciascuno dei due freni, anziché semplicemente dividerne la potenza in due.

Abbiamo già sviluppato un prototipo e effettuato i primi test. Fino ad ora, tutti i test sono stati condotti da Sophie, utilizzando la sua bicicletta personale e a proprio rischio e pericolo. Abbiamo investito molto denaro, tempo e energie nello sviluppo del prototipo. Per portare avanti il progetto con successo e per poter fornire, si spera, lo Sdoppiatore a tante altre persone, ora abbiamo bisogno del vostro sostegno!
