Due anni e mezzo fa mio padre Ray, city planner, esperto di progettazione partecipata e scrittore, ha avuto una gravissima emorragia cerebrale che, nel giro di una notte, da persona attiva e piena di vita che aveva da poco pubblicato il suo ultimo libro, lo ha lasciato incapace di muoversi, mangiare e parlare.

Per i medici c'era poco da fare se non accudirlo. Dopo 8 mesi di cure e riabilitazione ospedaliere poco proficue, abbiamo deciso di riportarlo a casa dove con le attenzioni, l'amore e costanti interventi di fisioterapia e logopedia siamo riusciti a fargli raggiungere condizioni di salute buone ma, soprattutto, capacità di comunicazione insperate attraverso le quali oggi ride, sorride, si commuove, fa capire cosa gli serve, riconosce le voci e segue interi programmi televisivi che, a giudicare dell'attenzione, sembra comprendere a pieno.

Questo ha provocato in lui una crescente frustrazione, che mostra con espressioni di disagio e pianto quando non riesce a comunicare i suoi bisogni. Per tale motivo abbiamo deciso di noleggiare un puntatore oculare, ovvero un computer che può azionare con gli occhi, che a distanza di solo poche settimane già utilizza per diverse ore al giorno con grande gioia e soddisfazione. Ovviamente ci siamo attivati perché la ASL ce lo fornisca ma i tempi sono lunghi e il noleggio di questo strumento costa 960 euro al mese. La nostra famiglia non è in grado di sostenere una tale spesa in aggiunta al costo mensile che comporta curare a casa una persona nelle condizioni di Ray, con l'obiettivo di migliorare ogni giorno la qualità della sua vita.

Con questo croudfunding chiediamo ad amici, parenti e colleghi di aiutarci a mantenere il noleggio di questo prezioso strumento (Tobii Dynavox I-16 Expert) per il tempo necessario a Ray, una decina di mesi forse, per imparare ad usarlo e, perché no, nel tempo riuscire addirittura a finire la stesura dei suoi due libri rimasti incompleti.

Ogni cifra piccola o grande è benvenuta: anche solo un giorno in più conta per Ray e per noi, grazie.

In pochissimi giorni, abbiamo raggiunto l'obiettivo di assicurare a Ray almeno 10 mesi di uso dello strumento.

Per dare a tutti coloro che vogliono partecipare l'opportunità di farlo e poiché ancora non sappiamo se sarà poi dato in dotazione dall'ASL, abbiamo deciso di tenere aperta la raccolta fondi.

Io e la mia famiglia vi siamo veramente grati per tutto l'affetto e l'aiuto che ci state dando. Papà sembra comprendere quello che sta succedendo ed è felice e noi siamo speranzosi di dargli una opportunità in più.

Two and a half years ago my father Ray, a city planner, expert in participatory planning and writer, had a very serious cerebral hemorrhage that in the space of one night left him from an active and lively person who had recently published his latest book, in someone unable to move, eat and speak.

For the doctors there was little we could do but look after him. After 8 months of not very fruitful hospital treatment and rehabilitation, we decided to bring him home where with constant attentions, love as well as physiotherapy and speech therapy we managed to make him reach good health conditions but, above all, unexpected communication skills through which today he laughs, smiles, gets emotional, makes people understand what he needs, recognizes voices and follows entire television programs that, judging by his attention, he seems to fully understand.

This has caused him a growing frustration, which he shows with expressions of discomfort and tears when he is unable to communicate his needs. For this reason we decided to rent an eye tracker, a computer that can be operated with the eyes, which after only a few weeks he already uses for several hours a day with great joy and satisfaction. Obviously we have taken steps to have the ASL provide it to us but the times are long and the rental of this instrument costs 960 euros per month. Our family is not able to sustain such an expense in addition to the monthly cost of caring for a person in Ray's condition at home, with the aim of improving the quality of his life every day.

With this crowdfunding we ask friends, relatives and colleagues to help us maintain the rental of this precious instrument (Tobii Dynavox I-16 Expert) for the time necessary for Ray, about ten months perhaps, to learn to use it and, why not, in time even manage to finish writing his two unfinished books.
