Unlock African Archives!

Imagine asking for a copy of your birth certificate, and the clerk can’t find it in the system… because there is no system.

Millions of Africans and their descendants can’t access historical records today, because they have never been digitized, or even organized. They are simply locked away. And there is no one to release them to the world. Until... MBUYU.

MBUYU is building a web site for The National Archives of Burundi, and sponsoring a local team (ABADBU) to scan hundreds of thousands of records to create a national digital archive. In January 2022 alone, 15,000 documents about African ancestors in Burundi were digitized.

MBUYU needs your help. There is no Internet access in the National Archives building, and the power cuts out almost every day. When this happens, no work gets done. Your donation will:

  • Get better scanning equipment to speed up the work
  • Get battery backups and laptops to overcome the power outages
  • Get internet access to the document room
  • Train more locals to help scan documents
  • Build a self-sustaining website for searching the images
  • Get legal, accounting, and marketing help

The goal eventually is to make records available from every interested African nation, and you can help make it happen. Your donation will help unlock the truth about African ancestry.

It's time… to Unlock Africa!
