Unite for Love: Countering the Hate

On Saturday, white supremacists are gathering in Boston, a beloved destination for Mainers of all colors, creeds and loves, ostensibly to rally for free speech. It is well known that the gathering is actually to support a racist, white supremacist agenda.  In light of the pain and suffering caused by a similar rally in Charlottesville VA this past week, we wanted to find a nonviolent, civil way to turn their hateful actions against their repressive and regressive goals.

In a Mainers for Accountable Leadership led initiative  -- in partnership with March for TruthRapid Resist , Suit Up Maine--An Indivisible Action Network ; March Forth, Brunswick Area Indivisible  , and Women's March on Washington-Maine -- proposes that for every hour that the hate groups rally in Boston, we Mainers fundraise and donate to Life After Hate https://www.lifeafterhate.org/ .   We are all dedicated to the principles of kindness, equality, compassion and justice.  Let’s put our money to work to turn hate into love.

To start the donation process, two of Mainers for Accountable Leadership’s co-founders Dini Merz and Marie Follayttar Smith each pledge $10 per hour for up to 5 hours -- the planned duration of the rally -- to Life After Hate.   If you are so inclined, please tell us your story as to why you are donating and we can try to get it out to the press.

Marie and Dini feel somewhat a responsibility to this work, in fact, in part because one of the principal organizers for Charlottesville, VA event has roots from Lewiston, ME.  One of the core principles behind the work of Mainers for Accountable Leadership (MFAL) is to hold our four elected leaders to Congress accountable to the principles of equality, justice, and acceptance.    We came together to organize in direct response to the hate and bigotry inspired election of Donald Trump, and countering hate-made-manifest groups is part of our larger mission to show our Congressional delegation that our collective voice has power!

Will you join us?  Let us try to raise at least $100/hour for up to 5 hours of the rally.  That is a total of $500 that we are trying to raise.  UPDATE:  we surpassed our first goal, so let's keep it going!

MFAL will be creating a large banner that we will hold up at the rally in Boston so that every person partaking in the rally will know what we are doing in turning their anger and hate into funding for a good cause.

Q --Is the hate rally still happening?  YES!  Despite reports to the contrary, the rally is still planned and they never actually applied for a permit in the first place -- so Boston cannot revoke a permit that never existed.  EVEN IF IT IS CANCELLED, any money we raise will be donated to Life After Hate and we will notify the press accordingly.
