United for Vabbie: Combatting Breast Cancer

At the beginning of the year, in March 2024, my mom Vabbie was diagnosed with Cancer. It was detected in two different parts of her body, and after three surgeries that were performed as quickly as possible over a three-month period, the Cancer was successfully removed.

Many of us do not know much about the disease beyond general aspects. There are over 100 types of cancer, classified by their grade (how aggressive they are) and stage (how advanced they are). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2020, approximately 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the most common Cancer worldwide.

My mom was diagnosed with infiltrating ductal carcinoma with estrogen receptors positive, a type of Cancer that spreads beyond the original breast tissue. Due to the aggressiveness of the tumor, the doctors decided to intervene urgently, performing a hysterectomy to remove the uterus. This procedure was crucial not only for treating the cancer but also for addressing a tumor and other associated uterine conditions, thereby reducing the risk of cancer recurrence. The hysterectomy was carried out with the aim of controlling the cancer and improving my mom’s overall health. By removing the uterus, the goal was to prevent the spread of cancer cells and treat conditions that could complicate her situation.

However, after the surgeries, the treatments continue. Her medical follow-up includes regular evaluations to monitor her recovery and determine any additional necessary treatments. She is currently undergoing radiotherapy, a medical treatment that uses ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells or reduce tumors. It works by damaging the DNA of the cells, preventing them from dividing and growing.

The purpose of this fundraising campaign is to help cover the expenses my mom has incurred during her treatment and those that are still to come. These include psychological support, medical exams, medications, and other necessary resources to promote her physical, nutritional, and mental well-being.

A principios de año, en marzo de 2024, mi mamá Vabbie, fue diagnosticada con Cáncer. Se detectó en dos partes diferentes de su cuerpo y, luego de tres operaciones que se realizaron lo más rápido posible en un periodo de tres meses, el Cáncer logró ser removido.

Algunos no conocemos mucho de la enfermedad más que aspectos generales de aquella.

Existen más de 100 tipos de Cáncer, y se clasifican según su grado (qué tan agresivo es) y su etapa (qué tan avanzado está). Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), en 2020 aproximadamente 2.3 millones de mujeres fueron diagnosticadas con Cáncer de mama, lo que lo convierte en el Cáncer más común a nivel mundial.

Mi mamá fue diagnosticada con carcinoma infiltrante de mama con receptores de estrógenos positivos, un tipo de cáncer que se disemina más allá del tejido mamario original. Dada la agresividad del tumor, los médicos decidieron intervenir de manera urgente, realizándole una histerectomía para extirpar el útero. Este procedimiento no solo era crucial para tratar el cáncer, sino también para abordar un tumor y otras enfermedades uterinas asociadas, reduciendo así el riesgo de recurrencia del cáncer. La histerectomía se llevó a cabo con el objetivo de controlar el cáncer y mejorar la salud general de mi mamá. Al eliminar el útero, se busca prevenir la diseminación de células cancerosas y tratar condiciones que podrían complicar su situación.

No obstante, luego de las operaciones, los tratamientos continúan. Su seguimiento médico incluye evaluaciones regulares para monitorear su recuperación y determinar cualquier tratamiento adicional necesario. Actualmente, está en la etapa de radioterapia, un tratamiento médico que utiliza radiación ionizante para destruir células cancerosas o reducir tumores. Funciona al dañar el ADN de las células, lo que impide que se dividan y crezcan.

El propósito de esta recaudación de fondos es contribuir a los gastos que mi mamá ha incurrido durante su tratamiento y aquellos que aún están por venir. Estos incluyen apoyo psicológico, exámenes médicos, medicamentos y otros recursos necesarios para promover su salud y bienestar físico, nutricional y mental.
