My name is Mindy Alvarado, I am from Guatemala. I have two small children of 3 and 2 years of age, and I am currently 20 weeks pregnant with identical twin girls.
The twin news was wonderful and exciting for me and my whole family. But at my 17-week appointment the doctor gave us the terrible news of a serious complication that endangered the lives of my babies: TWIN TO TWIN TRANSFUSION SYNDROME ( TTTS)
Our hearts broke, but we were devastated even more to realized that in my country NO ONE does the surgery to save them. We quickly started the passport and emergency visa process to be able to fly to the U.S. but this took us too long for the magnitude of the emergency.
We came across the TTTS foundation, Mary Slaman , who gifted us the flight and hotel, and who referred us to Dr. Quintero. Who performed the surgery last Saturday at stage IV. The final stage of TTTS before passing away.
After the surgery, Dr. Quintero told us that both babies have serious health problems, but are beginning to show improvements. His instructions are to continue to control my babies here in the United States with him since the chances of survival in my country are very low if we were to travel back now.
We have done everything that we can financially to cover the cost of hospital, consults, and I must say that we have to start from scratch to recover financially from this. But as a parents we want our babies to have the best future.
Throughout this journey we saw many doors close, but God had bigger plans for us and we now have stay, transportation and meals covered until necessary.
We still need follow up appointments 1-2 per week, each $1800, and additional surgical cost that must be taken care of.
Unfortunately, we have exhausted all our financial resources to continue the procedure in this country and that is why I come to you at this time of difficulty, I know that I will not be able to return everything you do for me, but I am sure that God will know how to repay what you do for helping me save my babies' lives.
