Stand by Edwin: A Fight for Freedom and Family

My partner, Edwin, is currently under ICE custody. His family and I are doing everything in our power to bring him home.

Edwin was brought to the U.S. as a child and has lived here for nearly 20 years, this is the only home he’s ever known. He’s built a life rooted in hard work, resilience, and a deep love for his community and family. His absence has left a profound emptiness and each day without him is incredibly hard.

Edwin is the kind of person who changes lives just by being in them. He shows up without being asked, gives without expecting anything in return. He is the heart of his family, a loyal son, brother, uncle, and friend on whom they lean on.

To me, Edwin is my best friend, my home. He is the man I love and cherish. With him, I feel safe, loved and cared for. He is always patient, always kind. He makes sad, rainy days feel like warm, summer nights. If you know him, you know his energy is contagious and leaves everyone around with a smile.

But now he's in detention, facing a system that too often fails good people. We see what happens in the world but always assume we will be the exception. We never believe it’ll happen to us, but once it does, you realize how quickly your world can shift.

We feel his absence in every moment and wish nothing more than for him he to be here, laughing and sharing life with us. We are fighting, and will continue to fight to bring him home and keep this family together.

Para mí, Edwin es mi mejor amigo, mi hogar. Es el hombre que amo y valoro. Con él, me siento protegida, querida y cuidada; siempre paciente, siempre amable. Hace que los días tristes y lluviosos parezcan cálidas noches de verano. Si lo conoces, sabes que su energía es contagiosa y deja a todos a su alrededor con una sonrisa.

Pero ahora está detenido, enfrentándose a un sistema que con demasiada frecuencia defrauda a las buenas personas. Vemos lo que sucede en el mundo, pero siempre asumimos que seremos la excepción. Nunca creemos que nos pasará a nosotros, pero cuando sucede, te das cuenta de lo rápido que puede cambiar tu vida.

Sentimos su ausencia en cada momento y deseamos nada más que esté aquí, riendo y compartiendo la vida con nosotros. Estamos luchando y seguiremos luchando para regresarlo a casa y mantener a esta familia junta.
