Unite for Cayne: Rally behind a Mother and Son
Donation protected
My name is Gabe Mayas, a 12-year Army veteran, raised by a single mother with the support of my grandparents. I am familiar with the trials of life when support can seem scarce, and I find the courage and determination of Cayne's mother inspiring. She moved to Florida from Indiana as a travel nurse to support ongoing pandemic efforts, showing her selfless dedication to helping others. A beacon of strength, she is raising Cayne, a kind and bright young man, on her own.
We live in a tight-knit neighborhood in Palm Harbor, Florida, where everyone knows each other. My 12-year-old son quickly became fast friends with Cayne. Despite our close-knit community, a tragedy recently struck that has left us all reeling.
On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, Cayne, only 15 years old, was shot in the face in an incident that appears to be accidental. Abandoned by the other frightened teenagers, Cayne, despite his critical condition, bravely dialed 911 himself. I shudder to think of the fear he must have felt, alone, wounded, and facing the unthinkable. The bullet that struck Cayne caused extensive damage to his mouth, tongue, and throat. He's now in the Pediatric ICU, having already undergone multiple procedures, with many more to come.
Cayne's mother, away from her family and friends in Indiana and without paid time off, faces a tremendous burden. Her son needs her by his side, but when she doesn't work, she doesn't get paid. As a former Army Medic, I feel a deep call to action in this situation. I am moved to help in any way I can.
Growing up in a single-parent household, I understand the challenges that Cayne's mother is facing. I know she wouldn't ask for help herself, so I'm taking it upon myself to reach out on their behalf.
These are challenging times, where division often seems more common than unity. But I believe in the strength of our community. I am appealing to you to join us in supporting Cayne and his mother as they navigate this difficult journey. The road to recovery will be long and filled with hurdles, including physical, emotional, and financial struggles. But together, we can help alleviate some of this burden.
Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a significant difference. Let's unite for Cayne and show them they're not alone!
