Some of you already know bits and pieces of my daughter's story, but I'm here to share the bigger picture and to expain how important it is that we unite Eden and her service animal, Lugar.
Since Eden was one year old, she has lived with Type 1 diabetes and it has been a constant struggle. The staggering medical costs, the trips to the hospital, the conversations with school officials and childcare providers and health insurance reps... but the hardest part has been the constant worry that when she experiences another seizure due to low blood sugar, that she will be alone or driving or with people that don't understand her condition. Now that she is a young adult at Virginia Tech, the concern has become even more prevalent.
If that isn't enough for one young woman to overcome, last August Eden was the victim of a horrific crime. While overseas, our baby girl was held prisoner by a psychopath. A very sick young man tormented her in multiple ways and planned on ending her life, but she used her wits and strength to eventually escape. She suffered trauma that most people, thankfully, will never comprehend and yet, she perseveres.
Eden has a wonderful support system at Virginia Tech and at home, but everyone agrees that the key to her moving forward is a service animal. Not just a therapy dog, but a highly trained animal that can alert her to low blood sugars before she experiences a seizure and can help her to function with her PTSD.
The good news- We Have Located the Perfect Service Dog!
Lugar is a 16 month old shepherd that has already spent hundreds of hours training with the most amazing team of people at Nordhausen Elite K9. Eden, Lugar, and team Nordhausen have commited to training every available moment for the next six months and beyond to make this work.
Normally, these service animals cost upwards of $20,000.00 and have a six year waiting list.
Nordhausen Elite K9 is taking a huge loss of income so that Eden and Lugar can be together for the phenomenal cost of $7000.00.
That price covers the very discounted cost of Lugar (he alone is worth at least $8000.00), months of intense training with Eden and Lugar, continued support, and training for our family dog so that Lugar is integrated safely. We are searching for an additional $500 to cover the gofundme fees and to help pay for incidentals while Eden is driving the two hours back and forth from Blacksburg to Greenville, Virginia.
This is an AMAZING opportunity for Eden to take control of her life!
She could go to bed at night without fear because when she does have another seizure- they usually happen in the middle of the night- someone will be alerted and she will not go into a coma permanently or even die.
Eden could be in a public space with lots of ptsd triggers and rely on the protection of Lugar to maintain her incredibly calm demeanor.
She could focus on the big task of completing an engineering degree program for which she is accruing an incredible amount of debt and improve her health with some much needed rest.
