In honour of International Day of the Girl Child, we've teamed up with Unique Home For Girls Orphanage to raise funds to build new rooms for girls as there is a shortage of space. With 85 girls currently being cared for, 2020 has been a very challenging year for Unique Home in Jalandhar, Punjab due to the pandemic.
As well as building a safe space for these young girls, we also hope to raise funds to help the girls continue to receive an education. Established in 1993, Bibi Prakash Kaur took it upon herself to build this space providing a safe home to abandoned baby girls. Since then, through the support from community funding, she's managed to help get these young girls to build a life for themselves; through a loving environment, medical attention/support, education, building their own families, and having established careers.
I had the opportunity to visit the orphanage in 2012, getting a chance to understand the challenges and trauma these young girls have faced. I also have seen how uplifting and inspiring it's been for them to be raised in an environment like this. It was a life-changing experience and since then, I've always tried to look for ways to support this organization.
With female foeticide and infanticide rates rapidly growing throughout India, especially in Punjab, we hope to help continue to spread awareness and support organizations like Unique Home For Girls who are changing the narrative and breaking barriers.
Thank you to each and every one of you that have taken a second to donate. Every little bit helps. Your support means the world to us and we are eternally grateful for your contribution. This act of selflessness will not go unnoticed and we know this will help change a young girl's life.
I will be withdrawing the funds to my personal bank account and immediately will wire-transfer all of the donations directly to The Unique Home for Girls operations. Once the funds have been sent, I will be receiving a receipt. The estimation for construction of building a new space is an estimated 10 lakhs INR (approx. $17,000 CAD). Our goal is to help minimize that cost. With the help of your donation, it will directly go towards the construction to build a larger safe space for the girls at the orphanage, providing new bedrooms, classrooms, and bathrooms - enough space for all 85 girls to live comfortably. The entire construction and renovation process will take a couple of months (slower than usual due to COVID), but we will be receiving updates on the entire process from start to finish - which I will be sharing via my social media accounts.
