Unidos por Katia: Ayuda a Nuestra Mamá a Superar el Cáncer

Mi nombre es Diana Veloz, y junto a mi hermano Freddy escribimos esto porque nuestra mamá, Katia Tapia Andrade, lo es todo para nosotros. No es solo nuestra mamá; es nuestra heroína, nuestra mejor amiga, nuestra roca. Nos ha enseñado todo lo que sabemos, nos ha hecho quienes somos, y es nuestro mundo.

En el 2016, nuestra vida cambió cuando a mi mamá le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama. Fue una batalla dura, pero ella la ganó—por nosotros. Creímos que lo peor había pasado.

El año pasado, nuestro mundo se derrumbó cuando escuchamos las palabras que más temíamos: su cáncer había vuelto, y esta vez estaba afectando su brazo derecho. Se sometió a quimioterapia e inyecciones en el estómago para fortalecer su sistema inmunológico. Pero aunque los efectos secundarios fueron duros, la quimioterapia no funcionó por completo.

Pensamos que no podía empeorar, pero los resultados del último PET scan revelaron algo aún más doloroso: no solo el cáncer sigue presente, sino que ahora tiene nódulos en el pulmón.

Los médicos de Solca, aquí en Guayaquil, Ecuador, recomendaron la inmunoterapia, un tratamiento que nos da esperanza, pero tiene un costo devastador: $9,000 por sesión, ella necesita entre 10 - 15 sesiones y por ahora está deteniendo el avance de la enfermedad con quimioterapia, pero la solución es la Inmunoterapia. Estamos haciendo todo lo posible para conseguir el dinero ya que nuestro seguro médico dejó de cubrir los gastos de la enfermedad, estamos en proceso de vender nuestra casa pero incluso asi no alcanza para los gastos medicos.

Si alguna vez conociste a mi mamá, sabrás lo increíble que es. Es una persona amable, divertida y llena de vida. Tiene la habilidad de hacer reír a cualquiera, incluso en los momentos más difíciles. El cáncer ya nos ha quitado demasiado como familia en el 2019 mi mamá perdió a su padre por esta enfermedad y fue devastador. Por favor no dejen qué también nos la quite a ella.

No nos vamos a rendir. Mi mamá nunca ha dejado de luchar por nosotros—trabajando incansablemente para mantenernos y poner un techo sobre nuestras cabezas, incluso cuando estaba cansada. Ahora, es nuestro turno de luchar por ella. Si tenemos que perder nuestro hogar para salvarla, lo haremos. Nada más importa si podemos seguir juntos muchos años más.

My name is Diana Veloz, and together with my brother Freddy we write this because our mom, Katia Tapia is our whole world. She's not just our mother; she is our hero, our best friend, and the rock of our family. She has taught us everything we know and has shaped us into the people we are today.

In 2016, our life changed when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a hard-fought battle, but she won it—for us. At that point, we believed that the worst was over.

However, last year, our world collapsed when we heard the words we feared the most: her cancer had returned, and this time it was affecting her right arm. Our mother underwent chemotherapy and stomach injections to strengthen her immune system, and despite the more severe side effects, the chemotherapy did not completely treat the cancer like before.

Just when we thought it couldn't get worse, the results of the latest PET scan revealed something even more painful: not only is the cancer still present but now it has nodules in the lung.

The doctors of SOLCA, here in Guayaquil, Ecuador, have recommended combating the cancer with immunotherapy, a treatment that gives us hope. However, the cost is high at $9,000 per session and the doctors believe that she needs between 10 - 15 sessions. As of right now, she is slowing the growth of the cancer by way of chemotherapy, but the more optimal solution is immunotherapy to tackle the cancer altogether. We are doing everything possible to get the money to fund this, as our health insurance stopped covering the expenses of the disease. We are selling our house that we built as a family, but isn’t enough to cover her medical bills.

If you've ever had the pleasure of meeting my mom, you'll know how amazing she is. Many friends and family can attest that she is a kind, fun person who has the energy to light up the room when she walks in. He has the ability to make anyone laugh or smile, even in the most difficult moments.

Cancer has already taken too much away from us as a family. In November 2019, our family endured the loss of Katia’s father, our grandfather to this disease and it was devastating. Please don't let it take her away from us, as well.

We're not going to give up. My mom has never stopped fighting for us; she’s worked tirelessly to support us and put a roof over our heads, even when she was exhausted and battling her first battle. Now, it's our turn to fight for her. If we have to lose our home to save her, we will. Nothing else matters if we can have many more happy years as a whole family.
