"Why do you want to travel?"
Check out our students' answers in the video below:
Basic Information:
University Neighborhood High School (UNHS) is a New York City public high school located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Since its opening in 1999, UNHS has taken a holistic approach to education; striving to produce well-rounded individuals prepared to succeed in the modern world. Our school’s mission statement reads,
“UNHS is dedicated to preparing students to become global citizens through higher education opportunities challenging academic and technical curricula, and business and university partnerships.”
With this mission statement in mind, our school is excited to offer our students the opportunity to further their education through international travel. It is our belief that the best way to teach students about the diversity of the world is to allow them to experience it firsthand.
In April of 2019, 30 of our students (guided by members of our faculty) will embark on a ten day International Trip that will take them to four cities in four different European countries. This will truly be a once in a life time opportunity!!
The funds raised from this page will be used to help students pay for this unique educational experience.
Who are the students attending the trip?
Thirty students from University Neighborhood High School will be attending this trip! While, the students selected are thrilled by the opportunity; international travel comes at a high price. A price that is near impossible for many of our students and their families. A shocking 90% of our student population at UNHS are classified as “economically disadvantaged”….yes 90%! I am happy to report, however, that while most of our students have often gone without; that is NOT what binds them as a student body. Instead, what makes the students at UNHS unique is their resilience and sheer determination to better their lives through education.
Realizing that opportunities like this one do not come every day, the families of these 30 students have sacrificed a lot to afford this expense. One mother writes,
“I am racking my brain on how I can afford this trip. If any kid I know deserves it, it is my son. We do not have much family we can ask for financial help from for this trip. They are all basically in the same situation as we are or even worse.”
This quote rings true for so many of our students. These are hard working families who are putting a great deal on the line in hopes of giving their children a better future through this tremendous educational opportunity.
What will the money I donate be used for?
The goal of this gofundme page is to raise funds to help supplement some of the costs of the trip for our students. A specific break down of the funds is explained below:
· $91 – suggested amount of tip per person per trip
Initial goal = $2,000…we would love to succeed this and cover the full amount though!
*Note: Students and their families are paying for the total cost of the trip (approximately $3,000). The money raised on this page will cover these additional costs, which are not included in the trip price.
Where exactly are the students traveling to?
Great question! Students will begin their travels in Berlin, Germany. We will then travel to Prague, Czech Republic and Krakow, Poland. Finally, we will journey to Budapest, Hungary. This trip allows students to “travel through the Iron Curtain and World War II to Gothic cathedrals and ancient cities that are now more vibrant than ever. Berlin mixes historical significance, rich culture and an exciting cosmopolitan energy. Prague, which escaped the bombs of World War II, woos you with old-world charm. And in Krakow and Budapest, two of Europe's most underrated cities, architectural gems await around every corner.” (eftours website). In a world that is overly judgmental and plagued by hate; UNHS serves as a beacon of hope and opportunity for all the students who walk through our doors. Our diverse student population creates a unique and safe environment for students to share their culture while learning about the culture of others. A trip like this will only enrich our school community further.
Closing Thoughts:
In closing, I can promise you that the students who are going on this trip are going to be some of the brightest and most influential leaders of their generation. The money you donate is not only an investment in this trip; but an investment in the future of these 32 students. Please consider donating…no amount is too small.
