Soy Natalia, la persona que está detrás del Santuario Vera, un hogar para animales víctimas de maltrato o abandono, donde viven felices y libres de explotación. Llevo muchos años luchando sola con ayuda puntual para sacar esto adelante, en una situación personal que no ha sido nada fácil, pero siempre con la convicción de que estos animales merecen todo mi esfuerzo para darles la mejor vida posible.

Durante mucho tiempo hemos intentado mejorar nuestra situación, sobre todo buscando un lugar donde el santuario pudiera crecer tranquilo, lejos de los problemas con vecinos que no quieren animales cerca de sus casas (todas ilegales, por supuesto) y del espacio reducido en el que estamos.

Hace algo más de un año nos ofrecieron un terreno en Asturias al que conseguimos mudarnos, pero en pocos meses tuvimos que dejarlo. El propietario nos ocultó que se inundaba y surgieron muchos problemas que hacían imposible que los animales vivieran allí la vida que merecen. Recibimos algo de ayuda entonces, además de poner mucho dinero propio para arreglar el lugar. Aunque ya no sea adecuado para que nosotros vivamos allí, ese terreno sigue siendo aprovechado por otros animales rescatados, como caballos y ovejas, que pastan tranquilos, y nos quedamos con la satisfacción de haber creado un espacio que sigue ayudando a los más necesitados mientras dura el contrato de cesión.

Ahora, por fin, tenemos una oportunidad maravillosa: un sitio propio, mejor que cualquiera que hemos tenido antes, nuestro para siempre, en plena naturaleza y rodeados de bosque, donde esta familia podrá vivir como siempre soñamos.

Esta vez nos vamos un poquito más lejos, a Polonia, de donde soy originaria y donde contamos con un terreno de más de 30.000 metros cuadrados lleno de pasto y donde toda la comida adicional que podamos necesitar para nuestros herbívoros, por ejemplo en invierno, nos será proporcionada a un coste muy barato, a diferencia del gran coste que nos supone ahora.

Estamos recaudando dinero para poder llevar a cabo la mudanza y adecuar el terreno y las instalaciones para todos los habitantes. Tenemos algunas instalaciones allí, pero nos falta construir las cuadras, la zona exterior e interior para gatos, construir una voladera para los loros y otra para las palomas (con sus respectivas zonas interiores), espacio para las tortugas y mucho más.

Vamos a poner toda nuestra energía en el trabajo físico que nos espera, pero necesitamos ayuda para costear los materiales de construcción y el propio traslado de todos los animales y sus cosas. Cualquier aportación será un regalo enorme, y gracias a ello podremos empezar esta nueva etapa donde, por fin, todos estos animales podrán vivir seguros, libres y felices.

Relación aproximada de gastos imprescindibles para mudarnos:

- Vallado y división de zonas: 110 postes de madera a 9 € (990 €) y 3 rollos de malla cinegética a unos 100 € (300 €), más mano de obra unos 300 €.

- Zona para gatos: un "gatario" exterior adaptado con un invernadero (200 €) y malla (100 €), además de la caseta interior aislada (630 €, unos 700 € con materiales).

- Construcción de madera que incluye: cuadra y zona cubierta para que los animales puedan resguardarse si es necesario, palomar interior y zona cerrada para los loros. Un amigo nos ha dado un presupuesto de unos 3000€.

Sólo estas construcciones suman un coste aproximado de 5590€ a lo que se suma el coste del propio traslado de los animales y los materiales que ya tenemos aquí.

He puesto un objetivo de 5000€ que es lo mínimo que necesitamos para arrancar, porque ya hay algunas maravillosas personas ayudando y, obviamente, yo estoy poniendo todos mis medios económicos para lograrlo. Más adelante seguiremos mejorando y ampliando, pero esto es lo imprescindible para poder mudarnos.

I’m Natalia, the person behind Santuario Vera — a home for animals who have suffered abuse or abandonment, where they can live happily, free from exploitation. I’ve spent many years fighting for this almost on my own, with occasional help, through a personal situation that has been anything but easy. Still, I’ve always held onto the conviction that these animals deserve all my efforts to give them the best life possible.

For a long time, we’ve tried to improve our situation, mainly by searching for a place where the sanctuary could grow peacefully, far from neighbors who don’t want animals near their (all illegal) houses, and away from the cramped space we’ve been stuck in.

A little over a year ago, we were offered land in Asturias and managed to move there, but within a few months we had to leave. The owner hid the fact that the land floods, and many problems came up that made it impossible for the animals to live the lives they deserve. At that time we received some help and put in a lot of our own money to fix up the place. Even though it’s no longer suitable for us to live there, the land is still being used by other rescued animals, like horses and sheep who graze peacefully — so we’re left with the satisfaction of having created a space that continues to help those most in need, at least for as long as the lease lasts.

Now, at last, we have a wonderful opportunity: a place of our own, better than any we’ve had before, ours forever, in the heart of nature, surrounded by forest, where this family can finally live the way we always dreamed.

This time we’re moving a little farther away — to Poland, where I’m originally from. There we have over 30,000 square meters of pasture, and all the extra food we might need for our herbivores, especially in winter, will be provided at a very low cost — so different from the high expenses we face now.

We’re raising funds to carry out the move and prepare the land and facilities for all the residents. We already have some infrastructure there, but we still need to build stables, an outdoor and indoor area for the cats, aviaries for the parrots and another for the pigeons (each with their indoor spaces), an area for the tortoises, and much more.

We’ll put all our energy into the physical work ahead, but we need help to cover the costs of construction materials and the transport of all the animals and everything we’ve gathered for them. Any contribution will be an enormous gift, and thanks to it we’ll be able to start this new chapter where, finally, all these animals can live safe, free and happy.

Approximate essential costs for the move:

Fencing and sectioning the land: 110 wooden posts at €9 each (€990) and 3 rolls of fencing wire at around €100 each (€300), plus about €300 for labor.

Cat area: an outdoor "catio" adapted from a greenhouse (€200) and mesh (€100), plus an insulated indoor shelter (€630, roughly €700 with materials).

Wooden structure that includes: stable and covered area for the animals to take shelter, indoor pigeon loft, and enclosed area for the parrots. A friend has given us an estimate of about €3,000.

Just these constructions add up to approximately €5,590, plus the cost of transporting the animals and all the materials we already have here. I’ve set a goal of €5,000, which is the bare minimum we need to get started, because some wonderful people are already helping, and of course I’m putting in all my own resources to make this happen. Later on we’ll continue improving and expanding, but this is the absolute minimum to be able to move.
