Unexpected Medical Emergency for Our Family Cat

Donation protected

Hi everyone, my name is Bria, and I’m raising funds for our beloved cat Buddy (his name is Lync on paper, but everyone — including our neighbours — knows him as Buddy). He’s been part of our family since 2017, when we rescued him from an abusive home at just one year old. He’ll be 11 years old this April, and since coming into our lives he’s been a gentle, affectionate, and deeply loved family member.

This morning, Buddy suddenly became extremely lethargic and wouldn’t eat. Around 8am, he vomited once (clear fluid), and over the next few hours it became clear that instead of improving, he was declining. Given his past medical history, we knew we couldn’t wait — so we took him to the emergency vet.

Buddy has had a urinary blockage in the past (about six years ago), which required emergency treatment. Since then, we have strictly kept him on a urinary-specific diet and monitored him carefully. Unfortunately, the emergency vet strongly suspects that Buddy is developing another urinary tract blockage, which is especially dangerous in male cats. Because he is now considered a senior, the vet also needs to rule out kidney-related issues, which can present similarly and require immediate care.

The vet explained that acting before a full blockage occurs is critical, as waiting could quickly become life-threatening. Based on their assessment, they are about 80% confident this is urinary-related, but testing and treatment were necessary to safely clear him and ensure it isn’t kidney failure.

The emergency visit and required care came to $1,577, which we chose to proceed with immediately to give Buddy the best chance. This expense was completely unexpected and overwhelming, but we couldn’t risk delaying his care.

We are asking for help only to cover this emergency vet visit — nothing more. There are no extra funds being raised beyond the exact cost of his care. For transparency, we have included a photo of the veterinary invoice.

Buddy means the world to us, and we’ve done everything we can to give him a safe, healthy life after his difficult start. Any support — even sharing — is deeply appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read Buddy’s story and for any kindness you’re able to offer.

Update:
The emergency vet was able to rule out a complete urinary blockage
, which we’re very relieved about. Buddy was found to be dealing with several overlapping issues that were causing significant discomfort, including severe constipation (fecal impaction), gas and digestive backup putting pressure on his bladder, and arthritis in his hips.

Imaging confirmed a very large stool burden that explained his sudden lethargy, vomiting, and loss of appetite. The vet treated and relieved these issues during the visit, provided fluids, pain management, and medication to help him pass the stool safely.

While there wasn’t a single simple diagnosis, the vet explained that addressing this early was important to prevent a much more serious emergency — especially given Buddy’s age and past urinary history. We’re closely monitoring his recovery at home as the medications take effect.

For transparency, we’ve included the X-ray from his visit as well as the invoice for the emergency care. We are only raising funds to cover this visit and truly appreciate any support or sharing.
