Tragedy struck on May 19, 2021, taking the life of Larry “Billy” Burton Marcum. A loving father of five, and devoted husband to Ashley. Billy was not only a skilled contractor, but he also turned his land into a sanctuary to rescue old, unwanted horses and livestock to give them a safe, happy home in their final years. He was an animal lover and never would turn away one in need. Billy would give the shirt off his back for even a stranger. He was on his way to remove a rattlesnake from a barn for a friend who’s horse got bit, when he crossed paths with a wreckless driver, who he then confronted, and the driver opened fire and shot him in the chest. He was taken to a local hospital where he then died. One of Billy’s sons was in the car and had to see his dad get needlessly shot. The suspect is in custody and the event is under investigation. Billy’s widow is grieving along with the children. They not only have to plan a funeral and incur unexpected costs, they also have the expenses of caring for and feeding the horses and other farm animals. Not to mention meeting the needs of the children, and possibly counseling of their son who witnessed the murder. Now all of this while having lost their main provider.
