Hi, my name is Cat and I'm fundraising for my sister's fiancé, Chris Metcalf, that unexpectedly passed recently.
Chris passed away very suddenly on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, just shy of his 43rd birthday. He was an incredibly dedicated son, amazing friend and significant other to my sister, Elizabeth Xayxana for 20 years and an amazing father to their three beautiful children; Jalen (16), Liana (15), and Chris Jr (13).
Just before the holidays, on November 9th, 2022, he was in the ED for a few hours due to exhaustion and slight confusion. Awaiting transfer to Neuro ICU, he fell asleep. Once this occurred, he hadn't opened his eyes until over a month later. He was intubated during this time - trach placement and on a ventilator, also had a feeding tube in place.
Once awake and off all sedation, there was no response (no eye contact, and was a full quadrapedic, per disease process, but not expected to be permanent).
As time went by, Chris slowly started to recover - making eye contact again, responding to voice, the kids even witnessed the first time he moved his arm, and expressed emotion whenever it came to hearing of his family. This was very exciting to witness, for his loved ones and all of his care staff.
Due to him receiving treatment early on, his prognosis was guarded/good and we were all very hopeful that he was going to make a good recovery. Only time would tell how much he would be able to improve. Neurology MD stated to give it a year, so the family planned to reassess around his birthday next year, but they never expected to lose him suddenly and unexpectedly on April 12th.
In honoring Chris's memory and life, I ask that you consider donating to help support the Xayxana-Metcalf family. Raising funds would help them during this time towards medical bills & funeral services, as they grieve and process how to move forward without him.
Chris will be deeply, deeply missed. Thank you for your consideration
Sincerely,
Cat Xayxana
