Creemos en la fuerza de comportarnos como manada

El aullido del lobo gris mexicano vibraba con fuerza entre los bosques y las montañas de México y el sur de Estados Unidos. Mucho antes de que pudiéramos conocer sus hábitos y la relación de su presencia con el equilibrio de los biomas, su aullido perdió fuerza como consecuencia de campañas organizadas de exterminación, hasta extinguirse por completo en vida silvestre y casi desaparecer del mundo.

Los esfuerzos por recuperar al lobo mexicano reunieron comunidades, traspasaron diferencias y siguen sumando esperanza día con día para el regreso de esta especie a su hábitat originario. Desde La sociedad de los lobos, queremos construir una red de apoyo que reúna científicxs, artistas, organizaciones y comunidades locales para estudiar su lenguaje, protegerlo y caminar hacia una co-existencia no antagónica que favorezca la reintegración a su hábitat.

Con tu apoyo podemos dar los primeros pasos: constituir legalmente nuestra organización, financiar el primer ciclo de investigación sobre el lenguaje del lobo gris mexicano y lanzar la campaña de divulgación científica sobre su especie. Conoce la relevancia del lobo

Durante siglos, el lobo gris mexicano (Canis lupus baileyi), el más pequeño y genéticamente único de los lobos grises de Norteamérica, sostuvo el equilibrio de su territorio. Sin embargo, fue víctima de una caza implacable impulsada por el miedo, la desinformación y la expansión ganadera. Para los años 70, su aullido se había extinguido de los bosques mexicanos. Los últimos ejemplares fueron capturados para iniciar un programa de reproducción en cautiverio, cuando su linaje ya pendía de un hilo, sostenido apenas por siete lobos fundadores.

El lobo gris mexicano es un guardián de los ecosistemas que habita. Su presencia regula a los herbívoros, como ciervos y jabalíes, permitiendo que los pastizales y bosques respiren, se regeneren y florezcan. Sin él, los delicados equilibrios entre las especies se rompen. Su regreso no solo implica la recuperación de una especie, sino la restauración de un pacto antiguo entre el depredador y el paisaje que comparte con tantas otras formas de vida, incluidos los seres humanos.

El regreso del lobo mexicano a su hábitat, iniciado en 2011, es un acto de esperanza. Cada liberación es también un acto de reparación: un reconocimiento de que podemos vivir en compañía de lo salvaje sin dominarlo, aprendiendo de nuevo a escuchar el aullido como parte del tejido sonoro del mundo. Verlos correr libres entre pinos y montañas es más que un logro biológico; es una promesa de que la vida puede reanudarse incluso después del silencio, si somos capaces de cuidar, escuchar y recordar.

The howl of the Mexican gray wolf once echoed powerfully through the forests and mountains of Mexico and the southern United States. Long before we could fully understand their habits or the vital role they play in the balance of ecosystems, their voices were silenced by organized extermination campaigns, until they vanished completely from the wild and nearly disappeared from the world.

Efforts to bring back the Mexican wolf have united communities, bridged differences, and continue to grow hope day by day for the return of this species to its native habitat. At La Sociedad de los Lobos, we aim to build a support network that brings together scientists, artists, organizations, and local communities to study their language, protect them, and move toward a non-antagonistic coexistence that supports their reintegration into the wild.

Learn why the wolf matters

For centuries, the Mexican gray wolf (Canis lupus baileyi)—the smallest and most genetically unique of North America's gray wolves—helped maintain the ecological balance of its territory. But it fell victim to relentless hunting, driven by fear, misinformation, and livestock expansion. By the 1970s, its howl had vanished from Mexican forests. The last remaining wolves were captured to begin a captive breeding program, when their lineage was hanging by a thread—sustained by just seven founding wolves.

The Mexican gray wolf is a guardian of the ecosystems it inhabits. Its presence regulates herbivore populations such as deer and wild boar, allowing grasslands and forests to breathe, regenerate, and flourish. Without it, delicate interspecies balances collapse. The return of the wolf is not only the recovery of a species, but the restoration of an ancient pact between predator and landscape—one shared with many other forms of life, including humans.

The return of the Mexican gray wolf to its habitat, begun in 2011, is an act of hope. Every release is also an act of repair: a recognition that we can live alongside the wild without dominating it—relearning to hear the howl as part of the world’s living soundscape. Watching them run free among the pines and mountains is more than a biological success; it is a promise that life can begin again, even after silence, if we are able to care, to listen, and to remember.
