Understanding My Jewish Roots

Dear Family and Friends,

I am writing to share with you about an essential upcoming trip that I am going on this February. Our synagogue, Congregation Beth Elohim, in Brooklyn, is taking fifteen 11th and 12th graders to Poland and Germany.

This ten-day trip, led by our incredible rabbi, Rachel Timoner, offers us the opportunity to visit such historic places in Berlin as the Holocaust Memorial, the Book Burning Memorial, and the Jewish Museum. In Poland, we will visit places like the Warsaw ghetto, the Nozyk Synagogue, and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. They have also planned for us to meet with other Polish teens who are part of the School of Dialogue, a program that aims to familiarize local students with the history of Jews in Poland.

I am especially looking forward to being able to volunteer to help Ukrainian refugees at the Jewish Community Center in Warsaw. I think the most challenging places to visit will be the two concentration and extermination camps, Majdanek and Auschwitz-Birkenau.

I believe that, as the next generation, being educated and able to experience these places in person will give me the perspective I need to keep our important history alive.

To help me along this journey, I would appreciate any support paying for my trip. When we return, I will invite you via Zoom to our group discussion, where we will share photos and stories of what we witnessed and experienced on our trip.
