Hello my name is Miguel Alvarez, founder and headmaster of the PW School of Art and we are in dire need of support. School is right around the corner and we are in desperate need of supplies. We are raising $5,000 for easels, paint, sketch pads, canvases and misc. art supplies. Our students are depending on this help.
"We are passionately committed to nurturing the arts in under-served communities. By bridging educational gaps and providing access to invaluable artistic resources, we ignite creativity and inspire bold exploration. Our mission is to instill confidence in individuals, equipping them to craft compelling portfolios, build standout personal brands, and thrive in today’s competitive marketplace."
I remember being a teenager, wondering how to carve out a path in the art world. The dream was vivid, but the road ahead seemed blocked—I couldn’t find any free art schools, and even if I had, admission required a portfolio I didn’t have the resources to build. Traditional art school was out of reach financially, and the support around me was virtually nonexistent.
I still hear my oldest brother’s words: “There’s no money in art—you’ll only become famous after you’re dead.” He urged me to find a stable, sustainable job, something "practical." I was crushed. Lacking the means and the encouragement, I followed his advice and looked elsewhere. But the fire inside me—my love for art—never truly went out.
Thirty years later, after a career in journalism and communications, I returned to my first love. In 2010, I left journalism behind to focus entirely on art. Since then, my life has become lighter, more joyful, and far more fulfilling. I found patrons who believed in my work and finally felt I was on the path I was always meant to walk.
Looking back, I often think how valuable it would’ve been to know then what I know now. I might have made faster progress, sure—but I never gave up, and that made all the difference. Now, I’m happier than ever.
Over the years, I’ve dismantled the myths I once believed: that art is for the lucky few that it can’t be a real career, that it's only valued posthumously. The truth is this is a gift we all possess. When nurtured, it can enrich our lives in profound ways. Each of us has a story to tell. Why not tell it through art?
That’s why I created Poseidon’s Wave, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to equity and sustainability. And now, I’m proud to announce our greatest achievement yet: the inaugural opening of PW School of Art, the only free, independent private art school of its kind.
This school was born from a mission: to make art education accessible to the undeserved, to close the educational gap, and to provide the tools and confidence young artists need to succeed. At PW School of Art, students won’t worry about affordability; they’ll focus on discovery, expression, and growth. Here, they’ll learn to build stunning portfolios, develop standout personal brands, and navigate today’s creative industries with confidence.
This is more than a school; it’s a space where fear is replaced with freedom, where expression thrives, and where stories are told without judgment.
