Currently, 22.8 million children between the ages of five to sixteen do not attend school in Pakistan (UNICEF). This figure represents almost 30% of the total number of children in Pakistan. Despite being intelligent and eager to learn, many of these children lack access to educational resources. We Zeyna and Saif Haji, and Zahra Habib observed this educational disparity and decided to take action.
We started weekly lessons on various life topics with students from Meezan School in Karachi, Pakistan. Upon meeting with these children, we realized the fundamental deficiency in access to proper education in developing countries. These children are bright and intelligent beyond their years, however, they are not given the opportunity to share their ideas with the world.
Both of our parents were raised in Pakistan and were fortunate enough to receive access to education, which enabled them to migrate to the United States to provide a better life for themselves and their families. As a result, education became a fundamental aspect of our upbringing. Our parents frequently reminded us of our good fortune to have access to American education, particularly when countless children across the world are deprived of such opportunities.
Through our weekly meetings, we aim to connect with students and expand their worldviews. Our meetings have specific themes centered around real-world topics, and our group discussed literature and media relevant to those themes. During one meeting, students discussed their future plans and highlighted the disparity between educational resources in the U.S. compared to Pakistan. Many students expressed interest in diverse fields such as the arts, computer science, and medicine, among others. This discussion is what sparked the creation of Meezan Connection, a platform to raise money to help fund the school!
.To support our initiative and the school, we aim to fundraise and generate revenue through our local communities, schools, and mosques. The funds will be used to cover the project’s expenses and provide necessary supplies to enhance the students’ education. We hope that you will decide to support our initiative to bring a voice to these kids. An investment in us is an investment in change.
