A little bit about uncle Bekele
My name is Beza Tekle. I started this campaign compelled by the dire condition my uncle, whom I saw like a dad, is currently in. He lives in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He's a great father of two girls and two boys, between the ages of 5-16. He was a long time former employee of SIM(Serving in Mission) Ethiopia. He's kind, generous, caring(even used to feed abandoned dogs), super friendly with an infectious laughter and smile that makes everyone feel special and at ease.
His Current Condition
Bekele has been bed-bound for over a year due to necrosis (death of body tissue) of BOTH hips. He's in a constant, excruciating and disabling pain; even going to the bathroom has become a traumatic activity. His wife is currently the breadwinner and sole caregiver. He needs to have both hips replaced; however, the medical expenses and the fact that there are only TWO orthopedic hospitals in the entire Ethiopia, has made this process longer and ardous. The surgery alone costs 400,000 birr($20,000) and $25,000 total including recovery/rehab costs.
