Uncle Roger’s Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Hola everyone,

Our beloved Uncle Roger is in the hospital in Prince Rupert. He was told on Friday October 14th that he needed to go to Prince Rupert immediately for an emergency surgery as his CT scan showed an inflamed appendix and a growth pressing on it.

He called Shola at 9:30 pm from the emergency room in the Smithers Hospital and she picked him up and drove him to Rupert in the middle of the night. He was admitted to the ER and then given the emergency surgery at 4:30 pm the next day. They found a lump at the join of his upper and lower intestines that was pressing on the appendix causing it to be inflamed. They removed all of it. The lump and the appendix and sewed his pipes back together. He has been recovering in the Rupert hospital ever since.

Thus far, it has been a really rough recovery. Things did not heal up inside as we had all hoped and the join between the upper and lower intestine began to leak which caused an infection and then eventually sepsis so on Monday evening around 9pm he went in for another emergency surgery and it was very difficult. It took about 4 hours to clean up the pocket of infection and remove the section of bowel that was inflamed. They then shifted the upper intestine out to a temporary colostomy bag and sewed up the lower to give it time to rest.

He is now recovering in the ICU. He has pneumonia and sepsis but he is doing relatively well despite that with small improvements daily. They had intended to keep him sedated and on a ventilator in order to give his body time to rest but it seems Ol’ Roger is not easy to keep down. He awoke from his sedation less than 12 hours after he got out of his surgery and they extubated him and worked hard to stabilize him for the rest of the afternoon. Now, about 40 hours post op he is stable, no longer sweating buckets and most of his body is cooperating.

If he continues to improve, he will remain here at the Prince Rupert Hospital until he is recovered enough to be transported home to the Smithers Hospital. This will be at least another 2 weeks.

If he takes a downturn for any reason, he will be transferred to a larger facility in either Vancouver or Prince George.

Shola has been by his side ensuring that he gets the care he needs and will stay with him until he is well enough to come home. It has been a couple of weeks thus far and it is anticipated to be a couple more at this point before he can be transferred home. All of which can change at a moment’s notice. Any and all donations to go toward his care at this time are appreciated beyond measure. They say it takes a village. And the love and support  from the village is what keeps us going daily. ❤️
