Dear Friends of Andy,
On Sunday, February 9, 2020, while riding his bike home from work, Andy was struck by a car. He was found 20 feet from where his bike lay and there were no witnesses to the accident. The driver fled the scene. An unknown caller reported a “gunshot” in the area and multiple police came to the scene. The sound reported was actually Andy and his bike being struck by the car.
Andy was rushed to Barnes Emergency and admitted to the hospital for multiple broken bones and abrasions, two brain bleeds and a possible abdominal bleed.
Andy spent two days in ICU and after multiple scans and an operation to place screws in his hip, his injuries include: a broken hip (in two places), a broken leg, a broken hand, three broken ribs, four vertebrae broken in his back, multiple fractures in his forehead and nose, stitches above both eyes and left elbow, abrasions and bruises over much of his body, two bleeds in his brain and an abdominal bleed.
Andy is slowly making progress toward recovery. His neck brace was taken off and the brain and abdominal bleeds remain stable. He is in and out of sleep, resting as much as possible. He is in a tremendous amount of pain all over his body. When the nurse came in this morning, she asked where his pain was worse. Andy replied, “My shoulder, but that’s not even on the list.”
He will receive physical and occupational therapy to help him learn how to maneuver his body in and out of bed and eventually to walk with a walker. His recovery will be slow and painful, but he remains in good spirits, ever the life of the “hospital room party”. He is loved by all nurses and staff who work with him and keeps them giggling.
As most of you know, Andy recently began a new job as a waiter. He has an apartment near his job. He was just getting the hang of his new schedule- bike riding to and from work, taking on as many shifts as he could and generally taking control of his life. This accident has the potential to create a huge setback in his life, however, Andy is determined to get through it and emerge stronger than ever. He’s got a great attitude!!
As a family, our intention is to support Andy in every way we can. He will move into Parker’s and Steve’s house (his sister and brother-in-law) for the foreseeable future, as he focuses on recovery. He has a large group of family and friends who will assist him in getting to and from doctor appointments and therapy sessions.
As much as we can do as a family, Andy will have expenses and financial obligations that he will not be able to meet during his recovery. While he will not be able to work for the foreseeable future, it is with much humility that we ask, on Andy’s behalf, that you consider helping him get back on his feet.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for considering. And thank you all, in advance, for helping our brother, uncle, great-uncle, and friend during this challenging time.

Warmly,
      Andy’s Family
