Unbraided Post-Production Fundraiser

Hi, we are the creative team behind the short film UNBRAIDED. In the spring of this year, we were fortunate enough to raise filming funds to shoot this very special movie at the end of June. The money we raised helped us feed our cast and crew, pay them a daily rate, and secure location, equipment, and insurances. Check out some of our BTS below!

Now, we are in full swing editing the fruits of that labor and asking for your help in getting us across the finish line.

Unbraided is the story of two best friends, Frankie and Jo, as they navigate a crazy adventure in Los Angeles in an attempt to find a hair braider at the last minute.

This story, written and directed by Caroline Renard, is a love letter to Black women everywhere. Read her director's statement below:

"Going to the hair salon is a ritual, a right of passage for Black girls. Whether it’s the first day of school, vacation or a birthday, you must always get your hair done and be on point. I remember growing up, my Mom was so adamant that we could never leave the house unless our hair was styled. Why? Cause it was a reflection of who you were in society. In this world, growing up Black, you’re always taught that you’re supposed to work twice as hard to get half as much.

You’re already being judged and scrutinized the moment you present yourself simply because you exist as a Black person. This goes double for Black girls: we’re taught that you need to be put together without a hair out of place because you’re already being counted out. Because of this, we’re almost programmed and conditioned to always be perfect. And it starts with our hair. It’s the one thing we can control. When the world and the way it treats us is not something we have any control over, we have to make sure that our hair is always perfect. Unbraided is my commentary on the social circus we participate in when it’s time to get our hair done."

We are seeking $6000 in finishing funds to help us complete this film -- all the money we raise goes towards paying our editor and sound mixer, submitting to film festivals, marketing materials and the opportunity for those who worked tirelessly on this project to view the finished product.
