Hi, I'm Skye and together with Lydia and Miriam, we are asking for your help to allow our dear friend Hai to purchase time-critical cancer medication that is unfortunately not covered by her medical insurance.

Unfortunately the worst has happened.

Hai has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of metastatic breast cancer at 35yo. After a lumpectomy to remove the tumours, we were optimistic that the cancer could be beaten with chemotherapy and radiation. Further testing showed that the cancer had spread to her bones, and this treatment was no longer effective.

The only treatment option now is to try and slow the growth of the cancer using CDK4/6 inhibitors. Her fast growing cancer might respond well to this treatment which can control the disease for years. She also requires access to drugs that can help maintain her quality of life while she fights this.

Hai is a PhD student, studying at the University of Tasmania, originally from Vietnam. This new class of medications, CDK4/6 inhibitors, is not covered by her comprehensive health insurance in Australia—Hai’s health insurance will only cover $1000 of medication per year; she is not eligible for Medicare. She is looking at returning to Vietnam, where she may be able to access the oral medications, but this will still cost $3000-$5000 per month.

It's money she just does not have.

We have no other way but to kindly ask for your help.

If we can fund her medication for the immediate future, we can give her a chance to access emerging life-saving treatments.

Hai is the loveliest person and has spent her whole adult life studying in Australia. She was diagnosed here in Australia, far away from her family in Vietnam. She’s part of the University of Tasmania community and completing her PhD in Energy Renewables.

If you know Hai, you’ll be unsurprised to hear she has kept her enthusiasm and humour through this devastating process. You may not know her by name, but can recognise her friendly smile from her part-time work at the Blackman’s Bay Hill Street, which she does on top of her long hours working on her PhD. Hai brings joy and laughter to any room that she is in.
