Una vita per Luna! (A life for Luna!)

Ho trovato Luna vicino al mare, in Sicilia, durante la mia ultima vacanza. Stremata, affamata e disidratata, aveva seguito scodinzolando alcuni bagnanti fino ad arrivare alla costa. Date le sue condizioni non sarebbe andata molto lontano, perciò la mia ragazza ed io abbiamo deciso di prenderla con noi. 

(I found Luna near the sea in Sicily during my last vacation. Exhausted, starving and dehydrated, she had followed a group of people, constantly wagging her tail, eventually arriving near the coast. Given her condition she would not have gone far, therefore my girlfriend and I decided to take her with us.)



Prima di portarla a casa con noi l'abbiamo fatta visitare in una clinica. È risultata negativa al Parvo virus ma positiva al Corona virus. Le abbiamo subito comprato gli antibiotici prescritti e nella settimana successiva la sua ripresa sembrava procedere bene. 

(Before taking her home with us, we had her visited at a clinic. She fortunately did not have the Parvo virus, but still tested positive to the Corona Virus. We thus bought the prescribed antibiotics and for the following week her recovery seemed to proceed well.)



Tuttavia, dopo alcuni giorni Luna ha iniziato ad avere difficoltà a ingerire il cibo, rigurgitando spesso ciò che mangiava. Abbiamo subito provveduto a farle fare delle lastre e il veterinario ci ha detto che soffriva di una forma non operabile di megaesofago, che causa un rallentamento del tratto esofageo.

(However, after a few days Luna started having difficulties in ingesting her food, frequently regurgitating what she ate. We promptly got her visited and the vet told us that the X-rays showed that she suffered from an inoperable form of  Esophageal achalasia, an esophageal motility disorder.)



Ancora una volta le abbiamo comprato i medicinali prescritti e abbiamo iniziato ad alimentarla dall'alto con solo cibo umido. Nel frattempo la nostra vacanza è terminata e dato che nemmeno le associazioni erano disposte a prendersi cura di Luna, l'abbiamo portata a casa con noi. Luna si è comportata benissimo per tutto il viaggio, non lamentandosi del trasportino e diventando la mascotte dell'aeroporto grazie alla sua allegria e al buffo pannolino che le abbiamo messo.

(Yet again we bought the prescribed medicines and we started feeding her from above, using only wet food. In the meantime our vacation came to an end and since not even associations where willing to take care of Luna, we brought her home with us. Luna was really well behaved for the entire trip, not complaining about her carrier and becoming the mascot of the airport thanks to her happiness and the funny diaper that she wore.)



Purtroppo Luna è riuscita a trascorrere poco meno di una settimana a casa con noi perchè il suo problema è velocemente degenerato.

(Unfortunately Luna spent less than a week at home with us because her problem rapidly degenerated.)


Essendo in condizioni critiche, l'abbiamo portata in una clinica all'avanguardia dove attualmente è nutrita con un tubo che le passa dal naso e riscaldata, in modo che tra qualche giorno possa sopportare degli esami più completi dato che le lastre fatte in Sicilia si sono rivelate non sufficienti. Ottiene le cure migliori ma si trova comunque da sola in una gabbietta e in condizioni critiche. Il ricovero è molto costoso (80 euro al giorno), così come gli esami di cui ha bisogno (180 euro per 4 lastre, 600 euro per una TAC...) e che riveleranno se la sua condizione sarà operabile. Ci aspettiamo inoltre spese aggiuntive dato che i giorni di ricovero non sono prevedibili con previsione e che non sappiamo ancora di quali altri esami o terapie potrebbe avere bisogno. 

(Due to her critical condition we brought her to a state-of-the-art clinic where she is currently fed through a tube running through her nose and warmed, so that in the next days she will be able to bear some more complete exams, since the x-rays she got in Sicily are not sufficient. She gets the best care but she is still alone in a cage and in critical condition. The hospitalization is very expensive (80 euros per day), like the other exams that she needs (180 euros for the 4 x-rays, 600 euros for a CAT...) and that will reveal if her problem is operable. We are also expecting other expenses as we can't precisely foresee the length of her hospitalization and we don't know which other exams or therapies she might need. )

Purtroppo non siamo in grado di sostenere queste spese da soli, ma non vogliamo assolutamente arrenderci. Vi chiediamo perciò aiuto per provare a salvare la vita di Luna, che per ora è stata caratterizzata dall'abbandono, dalla fame e della sofferenza. Se ce la farà avrà davanti una vita felice e potrà dimenticare il dolore dei suoi primi mesi. Grazie!

(Unfortunately we are not able to bear these expenses alone, but we don't want to give up. We are asking for your help to save Luna's life, which so far has been characterized by abandonment, hunger and suffering. If she makes it through, she will have a happy life and will be able to forget the pain of her first months. Thank you!)

Ovviamente vi aggiorneremo costantemente sulle condizioni di Luna e sulle spese che dovremo affrontare. Nel caso avanzassero dei soldi, ci impegnamo a donarli a uno o più rifugi per animali nella nostra zona.
