Azucena Losana es una artista, cineasta experimental y laboratorista que ha dedicado su vida a las imágenes en movimiento, a cuidar películas, revelar materiales sensibles y generar espacios colectivos para la creación. Su trabajo ha sido fundamental para muchas de nosotras y nosotros que habitamos el cine desde los márgenes, lo analógico, lo artesanal, lo expandido.

En febrero de este año, Azucena enfrentó una emergencia médica que derivó en una cirugía intestinal y el diagnóstico de cáncer. Esta situación interrumpió abruptamente sus planes de filmación —para un proyecto que había sido recientemente seleccionado y financiado— y la obligó a pasar varios meses en el hospital. Su salud aún es delicada y necesita continuar un tratamiento médico indefinido que requiere tiempo, energía y recursos.

Quienes formamos parte de su comunidad cercana y extendida creemos que es momento de hacer una pausa colectiva y tender una red. Una red que le permita a Azucena atravesar este proceso con mayor tranquilidad, apoyándola con sus gastos básicos: renta, alimentación, medicinas, terapias, estudios y consultas médicas.

Esta campaña fue organizada por un grupo de amigas cercanas que hemos acompañado a Azucena durante este proceso. En mi caso, la conozco desde hace más de 20 años; hemos compartido vida, casa, proyectos y colaboraciones artísticas desde entonces.

Los fondos que se recauden se transferirán directamente a su cuenta bancaria, sin intermediarios, y serán utilizados exclusivamente para su manutención y los costos derivados de su tratamiento de salud.

Este gesto no es solo una acción de cuidado, es también un posicionamiento: reconocemos el valor del trabajo artístico, que tantas veces se realiza sin seguridad social. Sostener a Azucena es también abrir una conversación sobre cómo imaginamos formas más solidarias de habitar el ámbito cultural y la vida en México.

Sustaining what sustains us: a support network for Azucena Losana



Azucena Losana is an artist, experimental filmmaker, and film lab technician who has dedicated her life to moving images — to caring for films, developing delicate materials, and creating collective spaces for artistic exploration. Her work has been fundamental for many of us who inhabit cinema from the margins: the analog, the handmade, the expanded.

In February of this year, Azucena faced a medical emergency that led to intestinal surgery and a cancer diagnosis. This situation abruptly interrupted her filming plans — for a project that had recently been selected and funded — and forced her to spend several months in the hospital. Her health remains fragile, and she now needs to continue an open-ended medical treatment that demands time, energy, and resources.

As members of her close and extended community, we believe it is time for a collective pause and a show of solidarity. A support network that allows Azucena to go through this process with greater ease, helping her cover essential living expenses: rent, food, medications, therapies, lab tests, and medical consultations.

This campaign was organized by a group of close friends who have been accompanying Azucena throughout this process. I have known her for over 20 years — we have shared our lives, our home, and countless creative collaborations.

All funds raised will be transferred directly to her personal bank account, with no intermediaries, and will be used exclusively to support her daily needs and cover the costs of her ongoing medical treatment.

This gesture is not only one of care; it is also a political statement. We recognize the value of artistic labor — work that is too often carried out without access to social security or basic protections. Supporting Azucena is also a way of opening a broader conversation about how we envision more caring and sustainable ways of inhabiting the cultural field and life itself in Mexico.
