[eng] My name is Mariateresa Veltri. I am a lawyer specialising in immigration law, a postdoctoral researcher and adjunct professor of European Union law at the University of Bologna. Recently, I have been working on the front lines of legal and humanitarian efforts to evacuate families from Gaza, alongside other colleagues from ASGI, NGOs and various other associations.

Today, however, I am writing to you as a human being.

Yahya A., a Palestinian citizen with a degree in Business Administration, led a peaceful and dignified life before 7 October 2023. He is the father of six children under the age of 15 and currently lives in Gaza City under bombardment, having had his home destroyed and having been evacuated more than 30 times. Miraculously, he and his family have survived several bombings. I speak to him daily and he uses his social media channels to document what is happening — his children's fear, hunger that is more dangerous than bombs, the greed of merchants and all the other horrors that war brings with it. One of his children, aged just 12, has started to go grey.

Since April last year, I have been handling his visa application to seek international protection in Italy legally.

In the meantime, I have started sending him personal financial contributions: thanks to these, his family and other families in the tent cities have been able to eat once a day, if not more. Yahya manages every euro carefully and regularly sends me photos and updates, which I can share with anyone who wants to contribute.

Now I need your help.

As famine, looting and massacre advance, I can no longer cope with the daily emergencies alone.

Providing one meal a day for a child today offers them a glimmer of hope.

Tomorrow — or as soon as possible — we will try to get them out of Gaza.

Funds are sent weekly by direct transfer, with maximum transparency. Yahya mainly uses the donations to buy flour, rice, oil and legumes when he can find them.

I would like to emphasise that Yahya has never asked me for anything.

It all started when, one day, he told me that his children hadn't eaten for three days.

It's not the solution. But it's something.

A drop in the ocean that, for some, can mean everything.

Sono Mariateresa Veltri, un’avvocata specializzata in immigrazione, post-doc e docente di diritto dell'Unione Europea all'Università di Bologna, ultimamente impegnata in prima linea in azioni legali e umanitarie per l’evacuazione di famiglie da Gaza, insieme ad altri colleghi di ASGI, ONG e altre associazioni.

Oggi però vi scrivo come persona.

Yahya A. è un cittadino palestinese, laureato in Business Administration, che prima del 7 ottobre 2023 conduceva una vita serena e dignitosa. È padre di sei bambini sotto i 15 anni, e oggi vive sotto i bombardamenti a Gaza City, dopo che la sua casa è stata distrutta, la sua famiglia evacuata oltre 30 volte e miracolosamente sopravvissuta a diversi bombardamenti. Parlo con lui ogni giorno: documenta ciò che accade anche sui suoi canali social — la paura dei suoi figli, la fame più pericolosa delle bombe, l'avidità dei commercianti, e tutti gli orrori che una "guerra" porta con sè. Uno dei suoi bambini, di appena 12 anni, ha cominciato a fare i capelli bianchi.

Dallo scorso aprile ho preso in carico legalmente la sua istanza di visto per chiedere protezione internazionale in Italia.

Nel frattempo, ho cominciato a inviargli personalmente contributi economici: grazie a questi, la sua famiglia e altre famiglie nelle tendopoli hanno potuto mangiare, anche solo una volta al giorno. Yahya amministra ogni euro con cura e mi manda regolarmente foto e aggiornamenti, che posso condividere con chiunque voglia contribuire.

Ora ho bisogno del vostro aiuto.

Con l’avanzare della carestia, degli sciacallaggi, del massacro, non riesco più a fronteggiare da sola le emergenze quotidiane.

Un pasto al giorno per un bambino, oggi, è una forma concreta di speranza.

E domani — o non appena possibile — proveremo a portarli via da Gaza.

I fondi vengono inviati settimanalmente tramite bonifico diretto, con la massima trasparenza. Con le donazioni Yahya acquista principalmente farina, riso, olio e qualche legume quando si trova.

Ci tengo a dire che Yahya non mi ha mai chiesto nulla.

Tutto è cominciato quando, un giorno, mi disse che i suoi bambini non mangiavano da tre giorni.

Non è la soluzione. Ma è qualcosa.

Una goccia nell’oceano che, per qualcuno, può significare tutto.
