Una carrozzina per abbattere le barriere

Ciao a tutti,

mi chiamo Gionata ma per tutti gli amici sono Jhonny, ho 37 anni e da 11 mi sono trasferito da Brescia all’ Olanda dove ho accompagnato la mia compagna e con lei ho messo le basi per il nostro progetto di vita.

Qui avevo aperto una rosticceria di cucina italiana, che mi ha dato grandi soddisfazioni: un punto di ritrovo per gli italiani ed un punto di riferimento della cucina italiana a Utrecht.

Questo ha permesso a me e a Mary di raggiungere la stabilità economica, pagarci l’affitto, ed inserirci nella società olandese, creando contemporaneamente una buona rete sociale sia con connazionali che non.

La mia “creatura”, stava restituendo tutto l’ impegno e il sacrificio profusi!

Purtroppo, piano piano mi sono reso conto che i ritmi di lavoro non erano per me sostenibili: ero affaticato, mi facevano male le braccia e talvolta le gambe mi cedevano per la stanchezza.

Dietro insistenza della mia ragazza sono finalmente andato a farmi visitare.

La faccio breve: era l’esordio della miopatia distale di Nonaka, una malattia genetica rara (rarissima! siamo in 600 in tutto il mondo!) che lentamente e senza fare sconti, si prenderà tutti i miei muscoli volontari.

Questo significa che mano a mano che la malattia progredisce, salendo dai piedi

verso la testa, io progressivamente smetterò di muovere volontariamente quei muscoli.

Voglio vederla in versione positiva: potrò continuare a vivere aggiustando il mio stile di vita, un “passo” alla volta. Per fare questo avrò bisogno di mezzi speciali (e costosi) che mi consentano di rimanere tra la gente, e muovermi per il mondo, rimanendo autonomo e attivo il più a lungo possibile.

Hello everyone, 

 

My name is Gionata but my friends call me Jhonny. I am 37, and 11 years ago I moved from Brescia to Utrecht, in the Nederland, to follow my partner’s dream and where Mary and I laid out the foundations of our new life.  

 

In Utrecht, I opened an Italian gastronomy and pizza place that gave me great satisfaction: a cosy place where Italians and others can meet and a point of reference for the Italian cuisine in Utrecht.

This has allowed Mary and I to achieve economic stability while also integrating

into the Dutch society and strengthening our network of friends and extended family. My “baby” was going strong and giving back on all efforts and sacrifices! 

 

Sadly, I soon realised that I struggled to cope with the physically demanding and frenetic rhythm of the job: I was exhausted, my arms hurt and sometimes my legs gave in from fatigue.   

 

Mary insisted I consult a doctor, and five years ago I finally did. To be brief, this was the

beginning of Nonaka myopathy, a rare genetic disease (so rare it has been diagnosed to only 600 people worldwide). This disease, slowly but without kindness, will affect all my voluntary muscles. This means that, as the disease progresses from my feet to my head, I will lose control of my muscles and won’t be able to voluntarily move them. I am a positive guy and want to keep this attitude: I can continue living a satisfactory life by adjusting my lifestyle, one “step” at a time.

To do so, I need special (and expensive) tools that will allow me to keep interacting with people and move around the world while remaining autonomous and active as long as possible.   

 

What I am asking is for you to support my fundraising to buy an exceptional wheelchair that I will be able to use for long as it does not require arm power to move and control. If you cannot contribute, please share this post with your network – it does not cost anything!

Would you like to know what happened to my gastronomy? With a broken hart, I had to sell it, but I cannot stay still, and I am planning to move for as long as I can. So now I work seated and do tattoos!
