Ciao a tutti,

mi chiamo Ester, lavoro come infermiera nell'ospedale di Piacenza. Sono appena rientrata da un’esperienza di volontariato a Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania. Durante la mia permanenza lì, ho visitato l’orfanotrofio Chakuwama, dove i bambini vivono con risorse limitate — eppure sono meravigliosi: pieni di energia, sorridenti e capaci di trasmettere una gioia contagiosa.

In Tanzania, l’assistenza sanitaria non è gratuita. Questo rende estremamente difficile per i bambini orfani ricevere le cure mediche di cui hanno bisogno. Una volontaria locale che lavora nell’orfanotrofio mi ha raccontato alcune delle sfide che affrontano:

"Attualmente, due dei bambini sono affetti da HIV. La malaria e le infezioni urinarie sono problemi comuni. I problemi dentali colpiscono quasi tutti i bambini e sono spesso i più costosi da curare. Purtroppo, molti problemi di salute che non sono considerati 'emergenze' restano senza cure per mancanza di fondi. Un finanziamento stabile ci permetterebbe di affrontare le malattie comuni e di essere pronti in caso di incidenti o urgenze mediche."

A queste difficoltà si aggiunge un ulteriore ostacolo: a febbraio 2023 la politica sanitaria nazionale è cambiata e gli orfani non sono più idonei a ottenere un’assicurazione sanitaria agevolata. Gli attivisti stanno lavorando per modificare questa normativa, ma nel frattempo questo fondo potrebbe offrire un aiuto fondamentale.

Con questa raccolta fondi, vogliamo garantire:

• Farmaci antimalarici e antibiotici

• Cure dentistiche per i bambini

• Visite mediche di base

• Un fondo per le emergenze mediche

• Supporto continuo per i bambini affetti da HIV

Hello everyone,

My name is Ester, I’m a nurse, and I’ve just returned from a volunteer experience in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. During my time there, I visited the Chakuwama orphanage, where children live with limited resources — and yet they are truly wonderful: full of energy, smiling, and capable of spreading contagious joy.

In Tanzania, healthcare is not free. This makes it incredibly difficult for orphaned children to receive the medical care they need. A local volunteer working at the orphanage shared with me some of the challenges they face:

"Currently, two of the children are living with HIV. Malaria and urinary tract infections are common health issues. Dental problems affect nearly all the children and are often the most expensive to treat. Unfortunately, many health problems that are not considered 'emergencies' go untreated due to lack of funds. Stable funding would allow us to address common illnesses and be prepared for accidents or urgent medical needs."

On top of these difficulties, there is another obstacle: in February 2023, the national healthcare policy changed, and orphans are no longer eligible for subsidized health insurance. Advocates are working to change this policy, but in the meantime, this fund could offer crucial support.

With this fundraiser, we aim to provide:

• Antimalarial and antibiotic medications

• Dental care for the children

• Basic medical check-ups

• An emergency medical fund

• Ongoing support for children living with HIV
