In Zaragoza, Spain, in the Actur neighborhood, the María Auxiliadora Foundation supports children and young people every afternoon many of them in vulnerable situations, migrants, refugees, or with limited resources. They receive academic support and close guidance that helps them strengthen their skills and regain confidence in themselves. For many, it is not just a place of learning, but the only environment where they feel heard, valued, and safe. The playground has become the heart of that time: there, play is transformed into learning.

However, the current play area has limitations. Since the center opened 28 years ago, no repairs have been made. The concrete ground is worn, with cracks and loose stones that cause frequent falls. The situation becomes even more difficult in the summer. In Zaragoza, temperatures can reach 104°F (40°C), and the intense heat makes the space almost inaccessible. 120 children share a single water fountain, and the lack of shade makes something as simple as playing difficult. Even so, the children continue to go outside to play, because that time is often the best part of their day.

Think for a moment about your own childhood that time after school when you could put your backpack down, forget about homework, and simply play. It wasn’t something small; it was a space of freedom and joy that helped shape who you are today. That experience, so simple and so valuable, also deserves to be protected for these children who already face many challenges in their daily lives.

We want to change this reality. That’s why we are launching a campaign to transform the playground into a safe, cool, and dignified space: a new surface, more water points, and shaded areas that care for them as they play and grow.

En Zaragoza, España, en el barrio del Actur, la Fundación María Auxiliadora acompaña cada tarde a niños, niñas y jóvenes, muchos en situación de vulnerabilidad, migrantes, refugiadas o con escasos recursos, reciben apoyo escolar y un acompañamiento cercano que les ayuda a fortalecer sus habilidades y recuperar la confianza en sí mismos. Para muchos, no es solo un lugar de aprendizaje, sino el único entorno donde se sienten escuchados, valorados y seguros. El patio se ha convertido en el corazón de ese momento: allí el juego se transforma en aprendizaje.

Sin embargo, la zona de juego actual presenta limitaciones, desde la inauguración del centro hace 28 años, no se ha realizado ninguna reparación. El suelo de hormigón está deteriorado, con grietas y piedras sueltas que provocan caídas frecuentes. La situación se complica en verano. En Zaragoza, las temperaturas pueden alcanzar los 40 °C, el calor intenso lo vuelve casi inaccesible. 120 niños comparten una única fuente de agua y la falta de sombra hace que algo tan sencillo como jugar, se vuelva complicado. Aun así, los niños siguen saliendo a jugar, porque ese rato es, muchas veces, el mejor momento de su día.

Piensa por un momento en tu propia infancia. Ese momento después del colegio en el que podías dejar la mochila, olvidarte de las tareas y simplemente jugar... no era algo menor: era un espacio de libertad y alegría que contribuyó a formar quién eres hoy. Esa experiencia, tan simple y valiosa, también merece ser protegida para estos niños que ya enfrentan múltiples desafíos en su día a día.

Queremos cambiar esta realidad. Por eso, impulsamos una campaña para transformar el patio en un espacio seguro, fresco y digno: un nuevo suelo, más puntos de agua y zonas de sombra que cuiden de ellos mientras juegan y crecen.
