Un Coup de Main pour David Cheramie

If you know Lafayette Louisiana, you know David Cheramie.

An artist, academic, educator, activist, and culture bearer for over 30 years, David’s influence can be experienced on the dusty dance floor at Festivals Acadiens, in classrooms all over Louisiana, and in any nook and cranny where Louisiana French is being exercised, taught, spoken, and sung.

He is husband to Marianne.

Father to Paul, Martin, Vincent.

And grandfather to Léo.

After years of tirelessly serving this community, it’s our turn to return the favor as David truly needs our love and support.

He has been a giant in the movement to preserve French in Louisiana. And yet, a giant is still a man. David is in critical condition after suffering a massive heart attack the week before Christmas.

There’s some positive things to note - Marianne was with him and the ambulance came quickly, utilizing precious time.

Neurologically, there’s been recent glimmers of hope in eye movement, reacting to movements etc.

As his status changes each day, this is what we can do -

Light a candle. Close your eyes and pray, sending love and blessings straight to David and his family.

We can also do a huge service in alleviating some of the financial burden and anxiety by donating to this GoFundMe!

Anyone who has been through something like this understands the hit it takes on a family’s resources. And if you’ve been so blessed, then I am sure you can only imagine…

David Cheramie exemplifies what it means to be good neighbor and a loving community member. Cheramie, his name and legacy, literally translates to “dear friend” and that’s what he truly is!
