The Umoja Street Child Trust are doing 'The Three Peaks Challenge'!
On the 4th July, a team of us climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland, within 24 hours! The three mountains are: Snowdon, in Wales (3560ft), Scafell Pike, in England (3209ft) and Ben Nevis, in Scotland (4409ft).
Our team is Davey, Joanne Clark, Robyn Fisher, Sophia Mutio, Holly Richards, Mike Reynolds, Kath Rogers, Jannine Wood, Amanda Wright and Jordan Wright. The Three Peaks Challenge is a team effort, with our drivers Steve Mutio and Craig Wright, being just as important as the walkers. THANK YOU to you all for taking part in this challenge. Please consider sponsoring us in order to raise the start-up costs for the project.
Our target will be to set up 'Umoja Nyumbani' (meaning togetherness at home in Swahili) as our first street children’s home and place of safety in Mombasa. Our vision is to see that every street child is loved, safe and free to reach their God-given potential. Below is a list to give an idea of where the money will go:
Start-up costs:
- Furniture for bedrooms, dining area, study area, office area - bunkbeds, tables, chairs, filing cabinet, cupboard, sofas
- Bedding - mattresses, pillows, bedsheets
- Kitchen equipment - pots, plates, bowls, cups, cutlery
- House equipment - brooms, buckets, mops, iron box
- Mosquito nets
- First Aid Kit
- Water storage tank (quite often Mombasa has water shortages in the local area. This tank will ensure that if a few days pass without water access, the children and staff will be able to access safe water for this time period)
- Clothes (including underwear, towels, etc)
- Learning and recreational equipment - blackboards, books, sports equipment, games, stationary, exercise books (especially helpful for homework club)
- Toiletries - soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc
Upkeep costs:
- Rent for the home
- Food
- Water
- Electricity
- Charcoal for cooking
- Garbage collection
- Wages for staff
Additional costs:
- School fees (and uniforms etc) for children when they are ready to attend a local school
- Staff training - first aid for children, further social work training
THANK YOU TO ALL who are supporting us - whether that's through liking our Facebook page or helping us raise funds - without all of you, none of this would be possible. Together we can ensure less children are sleeping on the streets, together we can ensure more children get the future they deserve.
