Gary Mason was diagnosed in March of 2022 with Stage 3 Rectal Cancer. He started experiencing symptoms about a year ago and thought nothing of it until this spring.
Fortunately, he was able to secure an incredible team of doctors who, within a month, were able to diagnose his cancer and set up an aggressive treatment plan. Gary thanks the team at Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa and local Vero Beach Oncologist, Dr. William T. McGarry for their support and care thus far.
Gary’s prognosis appears to be good. His physicians feel this is treatable cancer. However, he will have to wage the war of his life over the next 8-12 months to beat this terrible disease.
This week, he will be traveling to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa to have a port installed, followed by 16 weeks of chemotherapy, 6 weeks of radiation /chemotherapy and finally, surgery to remove the tumor.
Gary hopes to be able to work part-time throughout his treatment. For the past 35 years, he’s had the pleasure of working as a full-time Golf Attendant at The Moorings Yacht & Country Club in Vero Beach, FL. Luckily, he has basic health insurance through his employer. However, the costs to travel back and forth to Moffit in Tampa and co-pays for treatments and scans will run an estimated $25,000. The family's first trip to Moffit last month cost $2,500 due to the cost of scans, lodging, gas, and food. Therefore, Gary does not have any short-term disability benefits and will lose a significant portion of his wages over the next year.
We want to thank everyone for their prayers and support. Gary and his wife Alexis are in need of financial support at this time. With your generosity and prayers, we are confident he can beat this! Thank you so much!
Please stay tuned to this page for updates on Gary’s journey.
